  The Essential 50 Part 5 -- Battlezone from 1UP.com
Battlezone was a case of the right game at the right time: an innovative step forward in game design offered to a public hungry for something new and sophisticated.
Early games were in a lot of ways a learning process for gamers as much as for the designers who made them; as arcade-goers mastered basic gameplay concepts, they graduated to more intricate forms of action.
Early home conversions of Battlezone were unable to reproduce the intensity and immersion of the arcade original, and console games remained almost entirely two-dimensional for another decade after its debut due largely to technological limits.

AtariProtos.com - All Your Protos Are Belong To Us!
Battlezone starts off promisingly enough with a nice 3D lettered title screen and a really cool rendition of "Ride of the Valkyries", but after playing for only a few minutes one can see that Atari still had alot of work left to do on this game...
It was long assumed that Battlezone would have been packaged in an oversized box with a joystick coupler in the same way Space Dungeon and Robotron: 2084 were, but a picture of the prototype box seen in the movie Cloak and Dagger has shown that it was actually a regular sized box.
Since Battlezone was scheduled for a November release and this version is dated late September, Atari may have realized that they weren't going to be able to get all the needed changes finished in time to meet the released date and scrapped it.

Battlezone 2: Combat Commander review for the PC
Two years ago, the example was the critically huddled masses' response to Battlezone, one of the most innovative and enjoyable action strategy games ever produced.
In Battlezone 2, although scrap metal may still be recycled from the battlefield, it is primarily taken from mysterious "scrap pools" (?), which allow for a steady, constant supply of metal.
And, unlike in Battlezone, there is a great focus on treaded units, which can be confusing to control and certainty not as smooth as a hovercraft during a fight.

Game Studies - Social Realism in Gaming   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Within the world of gaming it is possible to divide games into two piles: those that have as their central conceit the mimetic reconstruction of real life, and those resigned to fantasy worlds of various kinds.
I suggest that game studies should follow these same arguments and turn not to a theory of realism in gaming as mere realistic representation, but define realist games as those games that reflect critically on the minutia of everyday life, replete as it is with struggle, personal drama and injustice.
While the game is more or less realistically rendered, its connection to realism is seen primarily in the representation of marginalized communities (disenfranchised youth, hackers, ethnic minorities and so on), but also in the narrative itself, a fantasy of unbridled, orgiastic anti-corporate rebellion.

Generally it is accepted that computer and video games constitute a cultural genre as such, but the distinctions, continuums and variations within that cultural genre remain uncharted.
Or, that a game genre equals hybridity, because game genres are complex sums of interaction and rule mechanisms, audiovisual styles, and popular fiction genre conventions.
Your average gaming situation in Halo, with the NPCs shouting out their war cries and generally acting according to militaristic clichés, equals one being thrown in the middle of a Starship Troopers or Aliens fighting scene (slap!).

Battlezone has become a kind of first person Command and Conquer, with 30 different units to control and if you get tired of fighting the computer, you can battle up to four players on the internet or eight on a network.

In the case of Battlezone, I'd have to say that a large part of its success was due to the talented people on the team.

Battlezone II: Combat Commander - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Battlezone II: Combat Commander is a 1999 computer game released by Pandemic Studios as a sequel to Activision's 1998 Battlezone.
The events of Battlezone II are set in an alternate version of the 1990s, in which access to alien technology necessitates the creation of an international peacekeeping force, the International Space Defense Force (ISDF), whose role is to oversee distribution of the rare bio-metal resource and mediate disputes between member nations.
Battlezone II was not made to be compatible with Windows 2000 and both its installation program and the main game executable will crash if run on that operating system.

Developed by Atari in 1980, the original BattleZone will always be remembered as one of the first video games in existence, along with such classics as Missile Command, Asteroids, and Tempest.
The remake of BattleZone by Activision seems to go with the notion that 90's gamers are more sophisticated and want different kinds of games than gamers in the 1980's.
BattleZone 1998 is a curious mix of a first-person action game, a strategy game ala Command & Conquer, and a wargame like Civilization.

I started up the game expecting to drive around blowing fairly pixilated communists to tiny bits, but what was presented to me was something else entirely foreign to what I had known.
This is the first game I have seen that bridges the gap between simulation games such as F-15 (since the hover tanks in Battlezone handle more like a jet then they do a tank) and strategy games like Command and Conquer.

Luckily for those of us that are still loyal to this game (and there are still quite a lot of us especially given the age of the game) it is continuing to be supported in an unofficial capacity by a couple of the game's original devlopement team by the way of new patches, etc.
Technically speaking this game is a vast improvement over it's predecessor, the game is far more moddable which has without doubt added to it's longevity, multiplayer is a lot more stable and it's no longer possible to cheat in the way that totally destroyed Battlezone 1 as a multiplayer experience.
Battlezone 2 is a seamless blend of first person action and realtime strategy, allowing you to control your forces and build a base, etc. from right there on the battlefield in glorious first person perspective whilst simultaneously blowing the hell out of hoardes of alien attackers with the combat unit of your choice.

 GameOver - Battlezone 2 (c) Activision
It has been quite a while since the original Battlezone was released, and since its very late expansion pack's arrival, now Pandemic Studios finally releases their long-awaited sequel to one of the pioneering games in creating the blend of "Strategy/First Person Shooter" (Uprising was first, but that sucked =).
Getting a game going isn't quite as simple as it used to be either, instead of using the original's excellent system of joining a regional server to a chat room, and there hosting a game, they had to change it to a crap gamespy system.
It's an enjoyable game, but blunting all the radical features means this game doesn't score anything radical either, I pray for perhaps the original Battlezone to simply be updated with nicer graphics and a few minor tweaks, its simply too hard to try and add more good features to the great game that was "Battlezone"
