Battling Siki - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Battling Siki (September 16, 1897 – December 15, 1925), aka Louis Mbarick Fall, was a Senegalese light heavyweight boxer who fought from 1912-1925.
Siki claimed that he had agreed to take a dive, but when he saw and heard the 50,000 cheering spectators suffered a change of heart and fought all out to win.
Siki was known to fire his revolvers in the air in public as a means of prompting his two great danes to do tricks.

 Irish Boxing
Boxing historians are unanimous in their choice of Battling Siki as the greatest optimist in the sport's nearly 300-year existence.
With the sole exception of Siki himself, no one was surprised when the referee raised the hand of the Irish challenger, Mike McTigue, after 20 closely contested rounds and proclaimed him the new light-heavyweight champion of the world.
One of boxing's most bizarre characters, Siki (he was born Louis Phal in the French West African colony of Senegal) startled Parisians by parading along the fashionable boulevards with a young lion on a leash.

The Swift Rise and Fall of Battling Siki
Siki, a wild swinging brawler with a crude style (think Ricardo Mayorga), has not gone down in boxing annals as a great fighter, but his story is one the most intriguing ones in the sport’s history.
Born in Senegal in 1897, Siki (born Baye Phal) moved to France as a youngster, where it was rumored that an actress had taken a liking to him and thus moved him in with her.
Siki was also arrested for pulling a knife on a policeman and slashing his uniform (he was fined $5) and of being “dangerous” when drunk.

Battling Siki was born Baye Phal on September 16, 1897 in Senegal, and moved to France when he was in his teens.
Although Siki had proved himself to be popular with the public, as was typical of the time, he was often on the receiving end of ridicule and racism, even from his own handlers.
Siki managed to gloss over the negative cruelty of the press, and relished his new found celebrity status, where he played the role of exhibitionist, often walking the streets of France with a pet lion on a leash.

Siki was strong, but crude, and therefore not considered too great a threat when he challenged the celebrated Georges Carpentier for the world light-heavyweight title in Paris in September 1922.
But Siki shocked the complacent Carpentier with a sixth round knockout that was initially declared a disqualification win for the champion, and then reversed to the correct result when the Parisian crowd roared their disapproval.
