Batwoman, again in a minor role, attempts to capture the Cat-Man in Detective Comics #311, 1963, "The Challenge of The Cat-Man".  She gets tied up by the Cat-Man who falls in love with her.  Batman arrives and thanks Batwoman for delaying him but the feline crook becomes smitten with the girl gangbuster.
Batwoman became a team player in this story using her fists to battle the aliens.  A red bat-symbol was now a part of her uniform, appearing across her breasts.
The Batwoman is still a well-remembered character to this day as reprints of her older stories continue to be published.  Though lumped in with the goofy days of Batman's adventures, she proved she could hold her own and save the life of her male counterpart and his sidekick.

Batwoman, or (less commonly) Bat-Woman, is the name of a fictional character, the female counterpart to DC Comics' popular superhero Batman.
In 1964, Batwoman, as well as Bat-Girl, Ace the Bat-Hound, and Bat-Mite were dropped from the Batman titles, which were undergoing a revamp by editor Julius Schwartz that eliminated elements that were considered too "silly".

The irony of all the talk about DC moving towards diversity with a lesbian Batwoman is that this character is one in a long line of lesbian characters in mainstream comics, and the fifth recent lesbian character in the Batman universe alone.

In the X-Men thread I commented on stopping the madness regarding a lesbian Batwoman, but at that time I thought it was a re-inventing of Barbara Gordon, not a new character (which I also said a few time would be preferable WRT gay superheroes).
Batwoman is awesome, but having a reference to her lifestyle (meaning beating it over our heads) in every panel (heck, every issue) will turn me away.
The original Batwoman was created in response to Seduction of the Innocent, a book that theorized, among other things, that Batman and Robin were "The wishdreams of a homosexual".

Batwoman won't become the face of lesbianism because Batwoman isn't a living person, of course, but that doesn't mean she won't come to symbolize a male fantasy about women who love women -- particularly in an industry so heavily populated by straight men.
I doubt she'll have any more cultural weight than Xena, even if she shapes popular perception of what it means to be bi- or homosexual in a similar way, but it will be interesting to see how she's received and how DC handles her over time.
Introducing a lesbian Batwoman shouldn't be even remotely ground-breaking (as someone mentioned in the article suggests, it would be more groud-breaking to have an ugly character), when you think about it.
