baud - NetLingo The Internet Dictionary: Online Dictionary of Computer and Internet Terms, Acronyms, Text Messaging, ...
In common usage, the "baud rate" of a modem is how many bits it can send or receive per second.
Technically, baud is the number of times per second that the carrier signal shifts value.
Using baud is no longer fashionable, however, having been replaced by the more direct "bits per second" (bps).

(baud (pronounced) is a measure of the "signaling rate" which is the number of changes to the transmission media per second second quick summary:
In telecommunications and computing, bit rate (sometimes written bitrate) is the frequency at which bits are passing a given (physical or metaphorical)...

baud - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about baud   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
In engineering, a unit of electrical signalling speed equal to one pulse per second, measuring the rate at which signals are sent between electronic devices such as telegraphs and computers.
Bauds were used as a measure to identify the speed of modems until the early 1990s because at the lower modem speeds available then the baud rate generally equalled the rate of transmission measured in bps (bits per second).
At higher speeds, this is not the case, and modem speeds now are generally quoted in Kbps.

Definition: baud   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Note: One baud corresponds to a rate of one unit interval per second, where the modulation rate is expressed as the reciprocal of the duration in seconds of the shortest unit interval.
The technique used to encode the allowable signal states may be any combination of amplitude, frequency, or phase modulation, but it cannot use a further time-division multiplexing technique to subdivide the unit intervals into multiple subintervals.
In some signaling systems, non-information-carrying signals may be inserted to facilitate synchronization; e.g., in certain forms of binary modulation coding, there is a forced inversion of the signal state at the center of the bit interval.

Pocket PC Thoughts :: View topic - When 300 baud was the bomb
My first modem was a 2400 baud beast, blisteringly fast compared to the 1200 baud my pals had.
I may be dating myself, but in college I actually used a 110 baud connection that predated the 300 baud connection...
I don't remember why, but I understood 300 baud was correct, but 1200 and up were bps, not baud.
