 [No title]
Baud rate Baud rate is a measure of the number of times per second a signal in a communications channel varies, or makes a transition between states (states being frequencies, voltage levels, or phase angles).
To illustrate this, first consider a modem with a baud rate of 300, using a transmission technique called FSK (Frequency Shift Keying, in which four different frequencies are turned on and off to represent digital 0 and 1 signals from both modems).
Thus, the modem's bps rate is also 300: 300 bauds per second X 1 bit per baud = 300 bps Similarly, if a modem operating at 1200 baud were to use one change in state to send each bit, that modem's bps rate would be 1200.

 Baud Rate
The baud rate of a data communications system is the number of symbols per second transferred.
Usually the baud rate of a modem will not equal the bit rate and is of no interest to the end user--only the data rate, in bits per second, is.
Therefore in referring to the data rate of a modem, use bits/s (or kbits/s, etc.), not baud rate.

 * Baud Rate - (Computing): Definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Baud: Colloquially, the word baud is used in the term "baud rate", which describes how many bits per second a modem can send or receive.
It is worth noting that the baud rate of a modem is not the same thing as the connection speed, which is expressed in bits per second.
Bauds were used as a measure to identify the speed of until the early 1990s because at the lower modem speeds available then the baud rate generally equalled the rate of transmission measured in bps (bits per second).

 baud - definition by dict.die.net
baud /bawd/ (plural "baud") The unit in which the information carrying capacity or "signalling rate" of a communication channel is measured.
The term "baud" was originally a unit of telegraph signalling speed, set at one Morse code dot per second.
characters, the actual "data rate" of a channel is R D / P where R is the "raw" rate in bits per second, D is the number of data bits in a packet and P is the total number of bits in a packet (including packet overhead).

 Baud Rate, Data Bits, Parity
Serial communication using RS-232 requires that you specify four parameters: the baud rate of the transmission, the number of data bits encoding a character, the sense of the optional parity bit, and the number of stop bits.
Baud rate, as mentioned on the Definitions page, is a measure of how fast data is moving between instruments that use serial communication.
In such a two-state coding scheme, the baud rate is identical to the maximum number of bits of information, including "control" bits, that are transmitted per second.

Nonstandard baud rates of the reader's choice may be substituted for one of the "useless" values.
Baud rates are derived by providing divisors to baud rate generators fed by a crystal-controlled master clock.
Each frequency requires a set of distinct divisors to produce common baud rates, while remembering that the accuracy of the baud rates is determined by the quality of the crystal used.

The data rates will be accepted by the baud rate converter as is and then turned into what the equipment expects to receive it at.

Peter Suber, "Mind and Baud Rate"
By "baud rate" I mean the speed at which information is exchanged among (say) neurons in a brain, or among circuit elements in a computer, or among people in a society.
The unification of the neurons in one brain is due to the uniformly high baud rate with which they can communicate with one another; unities of neurons are distinct from one another if the communication between them is markedly slower than the communication within them that constitutes them as unities.
His argument is that if any baud rate is essential to intelligence, it is the baud rate set by the rate of change in the environment at large, not the baud rate (if any) that finally trips over a threshold and congeals intelligence from circuit-running.

What is the difference between bit rate and baud rate?
Bit rate is a measure of the number of data bits (that's 0's and 1's) transmitted in one second.
Baud rate by definition means the number of times a signal in a communications channel changes state.
There are cases though where a channel can send 4 bits per baud, meaning that for every 4 bits, we have one change, and in this case, the baud rate is 1/4th of the bit rate.
