Baudouin Prot, chief operating officer of France's largest bank by market value, told reporters that cost cuts would be between five and 10 percent in equities trading and research.
Prot was speaking a day after BNP Paribas posted a 20 percent drop in fourth quarter profit to 696 million euros ($756 million) and sounded a cautious note for 2003 given expectations for further economic weakness.
Prot said the level of job cuts could be similar to last year, which were roughly around five percent of the division's workforce, according to banking industry sources.

Prior to the move, BNP Paribas (China) Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of BNP Paribas after it acquired the other 50 per cent stakes from its joint venture partner the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) last November, has already been granted a licence to offer renminbi services in Shanghai and neighbouring regions since 1997.
"We really hope that BNP Paribas will be one of the first, if not the first, foreign banks to offer renminbi business in our Beijing branch," said Baudouin Prot, chief executive officer of BNP Paribas.
According to CBRC statistics, 100 foreign financial institutions or their branches had been allowed to carry out renminbi business in China by July, taking 50 per cent of the agencies set up by foreign banks in China.
