		"cost disease" is mostly bunk — because it relies on measures of input prices instead of output prices...great as are the resources we put into [health care], the value of what we take away is much, much more.
		There is, of course, William Baumol's "cost disease" thesis, which is that productivity tends to stagnate in the service sector in general and in the government sector in particular.
		It is known as Baumol's "cost disease" thesis.

		Public spending in France last year was 55% of the economyafter cuts that cost the government an election earlier this year, but actually did no more than hold the total steady.
		(They have even given a name to this oddity: Baumols disease.) A good part of the enormous increase in resources devoted to public services can be explained by that slow-rising productivity.
		That may be why most voters in most countries appear to believe that, despite the huge growth in spending on public services, improvements in recent years have at best been modest.
