This year’s state elections in Bavaria ended with a remarkable show of force from the Christian Social Union.
For the first time in Bavaria’s history, the party of State Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber won itself a two-thirds majority in the State Parliament, with 60.7% of the contested seats (+7.8).
This is the third flogging for the SPD in this year’s round of state elections, after defeats in Hesse and Lower Saxony.

The result of the Bavaria state election held Sunday, September 21 indicates broad public rejection of the measures undertaken by the SPD (German Social Democratic Party)-Green Party government under Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, aimed at dismantling the German welfare state.
The CDU prime minister for the state of Hessen, Roland Koch, boasted on television on the evening of the election of his own capacity for “political leadership,” which consists of implementing unpopular measures with steely determination.
The Bavarian state election has made unmistakably clear the chasm developing between the political establishment in Germany and broad layers of the population—a gulf that is increasingly evident to those in power.

"Bavaria should be a blueprint for all of Germany," Stoiber said on Sunday referring to his state’s successful economic track record and the failure of the SPD to make electoral inroads in Bavaria.
The loss in Bavaria, Germany’s second most populous state, follows on the heels of other bitter defeats for the SPD in Hesse and Lower Saxony in February.

The tying of state support to forms of cheap labour had a precedent in Germany with the forced labour introduced in Germany during the period of the Weimar Republic.
Following the demand by a number of government deputies that their support for the package of measures was dependent on “improvements,” Schröder declared to an audience of trade unionists in Hannover that there would be no changes made to the content of the reform under his leadership.
The SPD had already experienced a dramatic loss of support in elections in the state of Hesse that took place in the spring of last year.

MUNICH - Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's party was headed for a record defeat in elections Sunday in the southern German state of Bavaria, battered by discontent over his failure to spur the economy and curb unemployment.
At the last state election five years ago the CSU won 52.9 percent and the SPD 29 percent.
The Bavaria vote is the latest in a demoralizing series of SPD defeats this year, after they lost power in elections in the northern state of Lower Saxony in February and were soundly beaten in Hesse state.

After heavy losses in state polls in Hesse and Lower Saxony a big defeat in the traditionally conservative Alpine state would underline Schroeder’s weak standing nationally after three years of stagnant economic growth.
Schroeder has repeatedly said that once the Bavarian election is out of the way, he expects talks to begin on his “Agenda 2010” package of welfare, health and pension reforms and a set of tax cuts he is counting on to kick start the economy.
