  Alcina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alcina is an opera seria by George Frideric Handel.
Like the composer's other works in the opera seria genre, it fell into obscurity; after a revival in Brunswick in 1738 it was not performed again until a production in Leipzig in 1928.
Since 2005 the Bavarian State Opera is staging the work in Munich with Anja Harteros in the title role and Vesselina Kasarova as Ruggiero.

 Auditions for German Orchestras
The Munich opera, for those who don't know it, is one of the very top European companies, and one which to this day upholds the strongest tradition of the repertoire system, in which operas and ballets are rehearsed and premiered and can then stay in the repertoire, sometimes for years.
The Bavarian State Orchestra, of which I was a member, has an almost 500 year history (earlier as court orchestra), and lists in the earliest journals Orlando di Lasso as conductor and an orchestra of decidedly Italian heritage.
It has been facetiously stated that "every train station in Germany has an opera house", and while this is not exactly true (I have been in many train stations there that did not have opera houses), the number of orchestras offering full time employment to musicians is enviously high.

At a ceremony at the German Embassy on Monday 22 November 2004, British mezzosporano Ann Murray was presented with the Bavarian Order of Merit by Deputy Ambassador Hans-Henning Blomeyer-Bartenstein on behalf of the Minister President of the Free State of Bavaria Edmund Stoiber.
She first performed with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in 1982 and since then has appeared in dozens of productions with the company.
It is for these outstanding contributions to Bavarian opera that Ann Murray has today been awarded with the Bavarian Order of Merit.

 Munich Summer Opera Festival Presents Seven New Productions

Coming from a live recording of four long operas performed on successive nights, one can hardly blame the singers for this - Wagner's demands on his singers are extreme, and by this point, one can expect little more than everyone going onstage, belting out their lines until the musical marathon ends.

Schubert wrote a number of operas because he thought that's where fame and fortune could be found, but he didn't have much dramatic sense, and although all of them contain some lovely music, none of them was successful.
