The Woomera Immigration Reception and Processing Centre (IRPC) was an Australian immigration detention facility near the village of Woomera in South Australia.
The Centre was closed in April 2003, and all detainees were transferred to Baxter Immigration Reception and Processing Centre.
Throughout the controversy, Prime Minister John Howard and successive immigration ministers maintained that their actions at Woomera were justified in the interests of protecting Australia's borders and ensuring that immigration law was enforced.

Their mother, Roqia, is also in Adelaide under medical care after complications with the pregnancy of her sixth child, but will be returned to Baxter and in December appear in court on charges of escaping from Woomera in the attack by activists that tore down wire and released detainees.
In an earlier report Ozdowski attacked the logic of the centres: “It is wrong to suggest that the integrity of the border protection system is threatened by the small, sad, flotilla of leaky boats with their desperately fragile cargo of asylum seekers,” he said.
Baxter, where the Bakhtiyaris and fellow inmates moved when Woomera was closed, is the largest and most imposing of the detention centres, built on defence land bordered on one side by the mangroves of the Spencer Gulf and on the other by plains sweeping across to the imposing Flinders Ranges.

Group 4 Falck, Britain's biggest immigration detention company, today called for the right to report 'disruptive' detainees to the immigration authorities so that asylum seekers' behaviour in detention be taken into account when decisions on refugee status are made.
The centre manager admitted to Inspector of Prisons, Sir David Ramsbotham, in his unannounced inspection of the centre in October 1997 that 'both the May and August 1997 disturbances had probably been caused by the removal arrangements for a few detainees'.
Ramsbotham also commented in his report of the inspection: 'It is frankly unsound and unsafe to hold people within a secure perimeter without clear rules and sanctions governing their behaviour, and without statutory duties and obligations being imposed on the staff who look after them.

In real terms, given the time that some of these cases take to find their way through the judicial system, there is a very real chance that detainees' children could spend long periods of their childhood behind wire in some remote detention centre.
