BOSTON -- Bay State Gas Company and the U.S. Environmental Protection (EPA) announced today that the company has completed an extensive assessment of environmental contamination at its former gas manufacturing plant at 600 West Water Street and a nearby property on Rogers Avenue at Eighth Street in Taunton, Mass.
The assessment was conducted in accordance with an EPA administrative order issued to Bay State Gas in November, 1994 to assess the nature and extent of contamination and to address any immediate hazards at the sites.
Fill material of sand, gravel, building debris and lesser amounts of coal gas manufacturing wastes are located on a small peninsula of the property and in a portion of the ponded area.

 Complaints spur hearing with Bay State Gas executives
Bay State Gas executives will be on the hot seat at the State House tomorrow as lawmakers question them about customer service, safety and employment practices since 1999, when the company was acquired by Indiana-based NiSource.
State Sen. Marc Pacheco, a Democrat from Taunton who is chairman of the Post Audit and Oversight Committee, said he scheduled the hearing because of numerous complaints he has received about the company.
He also said he is holding the hearing because the state Department of Telecommunications and Energy, which regulates utilities such as Bay State, has not been aggressive enough in overseeing the company.
