 Early beginning of the ice season
Since 20 October, longer frost periods in the northern Bay of Bothnia and in the easternmost part of the Gulf of Finland led to rapid cooling of the coastal water, completely using up the "heat reserve" from summer and autumn which were clearly too warm.
At the northern coast of the Bay of Bothnia, first ice formed in the inner skerries in early November.
As navigation at the northern coast of the Bay of Bothnia was expected to become difficult for low-powered vessels, the Ice Service of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency started this year's ice reporting on 15 November.

By mid-February, a large open water area had formed in the southern Bay of Bothnia, there was also open water in the Quark, ice in the inner skerries of the Sea of Bothnia, partly open water in the Archipelago Sea and an ice cover in the Gulf of Finland east of the island Motshnyj.
The greatest thickness of the fast ice was as follows: Bay of Bothnia 55-80 cm, Sea of Bothnia 30-40 cm, Archipelago Sea and the western Gulf of Finland 25-30 cm, and the eastern Gulf of Finland 35-45 cm.

 Winter field campaign BASIS / BALTIMOS over the Bay of Bothnia
The main focus was on the turbulent fluxes of heat, moisture and momentum under different ice conditions and on the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer and the interaction between temperature inversion and low-level jet.
In and beyond the area of the four surface stations, the German research aircraft DO-128 performed in total ten flight missions in the atmospheric boundary layer between 10 m and 2000 m height.
Ice conditions in the Bay of Bothnia were characterized by an about 20 km broad stripe of land-fast ice around the northern coast and by drift ice of different concentration and thickness in the interior which was shifted between Finland and Sweden depending on the wind direction.

The Swedish coastal waters extend from approximately latitude 55N to latitude 61N with a significant temperature difference during winter, hereby also a significant difference in the ice conditions between Bay of Bothnia and southern Baltic.
