As mid-level ridging and increasing northerly flow developed north and west of Larry, the cyclone moved erratically southward into the southern Bay of Campeche and eventually made landfall around 1000 UTC 5 October along the southeastern coast of Mexico near Paraiso, in the State of Tabasco.

Hurricane Bret formed as a tropical depression over the Bay of Campeche on August 18, 1999 and made landfall at Padre Island National Seashore, Kenedy County, south Texas at 0000 UTC August 23, 1999.
A qualitative review of tropical cyclones that have affected Texas over the past 100 years showed that those cyclones that originate over the tropical Atlantic or Caribbean are generally the stronger, while those that originate over the Bay of Campeche or the margins of the Gulf of Mexico are generally the weaker.
We hypothesize that given a barotropic atmosphere and a lack of warm plumes of water or WCE, that the inherent geographic restriction of the Bay of Campeche and margins of the Gulf of Mexico often limit the scale and intensity of tropical cyclones that originate there.

It is the largest offshore development project in the world to date, with a total installed cost of more than $5 billion.
Crude oil from the field in the Bay of Campeche is transported via pipelines to tanker berths at Cayo de Arcas and to storage tanks onshore at Dos Bocas, where part of the production is exported and the balance is transported inland by pipeline.
Produced gas is sent onshore for treatment and consumption and the balance is returned offshore for gas lift.

On the 3rd of June 1979, in the Gulf of Mexico (Bay of Campeche), at 80 km off Carmen town, Ixtoc 1’s offshore drilling rig, settled by the Perforaciones Marinas del Golfo on behalf of the national company Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), was destroyed by the blast of an oil eruption.
The massive use of dispersants, the settlement of containment booms and the mobilization of the whole PEMEX’s recovery means were insuffisant in front of such a stream.
