Bayer (crater) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bayer is a lunar impact crater located in the southwest section of the moon, to the east of Schiller crater.
The floor of Bayer crater is relatively flat and lacks a central peak.
By convention these features are identified on Lunar maps by placing theletter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Bayer crater.

This Crater is the goblet of Appolo according to the Greek myth.
Crater is a very ancient constellation: this region of the sky was known as 'The Cup' at least as long ago as the second century, and the name is almost certainly older.
The stars of Crater are unremarkable except in one respect; their unusual uniformity.

Bayer's Uranometria is widely considered to be the first serious celestial atlas, showing all stars visible to the naked eye.
Bayer devoted one beautifully engraved plate to each of 48 traditional constellations tabulated by Ptolemey, but based upon Tycho Brache's new determinations of position and magnitude he was able to plot the constellations more precisely than had ever been possible before and he also added twelve constellations newly recognised in the southern hemisphere.
Bayer also founded the system of nomenclature still used today, in which letters of the Greek alphabet are assigned to stars depending on their brightness, with Alpha being the brightest star in the constellation and so on.

 Bayer-Flamsteed Designations
The three-letter code, which, if given, preceeds the code for a star's constellation, is an abbreviation of the name of a Greek letter -- the Bayer designation for a star.
Bayer ranked the stars (not always precisely) by brightness, with the alpha star typically being the brightest in a given constellation, beta the second brightest, and so on, down through the Greek alphabet.
If a star is a double star, a -1 or -2 is used after the Greek letter to distinguish between the two stars.

It is surprising that the constellation was named by the ancients at all, except for the fact that it rather does resemble a classical drinking vessel, and was given to Apollo to slake his thirst.

Bayer CropScience spokesman Dr Julian Little told BBC News Online that the government's decision giving a tentative go-ahead to GM commercialisation was "symbolic" and made "in the face of a lot of hostility".
Bayer's GM maize, called Chardon LL, was given EU permission for cultivation in 1999 but it failed to get the green light in the UK until earlier this month.
But it said it recognised that this was a commercial decision reached "due to the unforeseen length of time the GM crop has taken to gain full regulatory approval".
