The Bayer Process - an economical method of producing aluminium oxide - was discovered by an Austrian chemist Karl Bayer and patented in 1887.
The process dissolves the aluminium component of bauxite ore in sodium hydroxide (caustic soda); removes impurities from the solution; and precipitates alumina trihydrate which is then calcined to aluminium oxide.
A Bayer Process plant is principally a device for heating and cooling a large recirculating stream of caustic soda solution.

Bayer's iminodisuccinate prevents against damage caused by metal ions in water, which can lead to undesirable effects, both in the home and in industry.
One of these effects is produced by the formation of insoluble salts, principally salts of calcium and magnesium, whose ions are responsible for the hardness of water and form precipitates with carbonate, sulfate, phosphate, silicate, and fluoride ions and with anionic surfactants.
Bayer's iminodisuccinate technology is made by treating maleic anhydride with water, ammonia, and sodium hydroxide.

Dealing with Red Mud - By - Product of the Bayer Process for Refining Aluminium
The alumina process used today is essentially the one invented by Karl Bayer in 1887.
They found that if the salinity of the sea water can be raised to about 1.5 times the ocean average, then the process is more efficient, requiring only 3.5 litres per 1,000 litres of red mud, as opposed to 6 litres of average salinity sea water.
For example, if the residue is left in a tailings dam after the completion of treatment, the metal concentrations in the water will continue to decrease for at least 12 months.

 Electrochemistry Encyclopedia --- Aluminum production
Sainte-Claire Deville announced an improvement in the process in 1854, that is reduction of aluminum chloride by sodium.
Alumina (aluminum oxide) powder, fed to the electrolytic process, is produced by the Bayer process from bauxite ore. Bauxites contain 40-60% alumina, combined with silica (silicon oxide), iron oxide, and titanium dioxide.
In the Bayer process, the alumina is dissolved in hot sodium hydroxide solution and the iron oxide and other oxides are removed as insoluble "red mud." Aluminum hydroxide is precipitated from the clarified solution by cooling and seeding with aluminum hydroxide crystals.
