Bayern class battleship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bayern was damaged by a mine in the Gulf of Riga on 12 October 1917 during Operation Albion while bombarding Russian shore batteries on the Sworbe Peninsula, she was heavily flooded and brought into Kiel with great difficulty after 19 days.
After the armistice the Bayern and Baden were taken to Scapa Flow and scuttled with the rest of the German fleet on 21 June 1919.

Bismarck class battleship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bismarck class rudder has also been criticized as being too small to effectively turn the ship quickly, and is seen by some as being in a "too-vulnerable" configuration compared to the double rudder setup of the American "Iowa" class.
The Bismarck class was, however, certainly as capable of defending itself against air attack as any contemporary British or American battleship, a fact HMS Prince of Wales was to discover to her detriment when dispatched to Singapore in late December 1941, and sunk by Japanese bombers.
However, despite the flaws of the Bismarck class, Bismarck and Tirpitz were perhaps the finest battleships in the world when they entered service — better than Britain's King George V class, and capable of meeting the Americans' later South Dakota and Iowa class battleships on competitive terms.

 Bayern History
The Bayern class were the last German battleships of the Hochseeflotte, only two of the four ships were completed during World War I. Construction started after a huge discussion about the main artillery for those ships ranging from 35,6 to 40 cm.
The general construction was based on the previous battleship class, the König class, and again it was planed to add a diesel engine to the ship to enhance their endurance.
Bayern and Baden were commissioned during wartime, but both ships came too late for the battle of Jutland and did not see many actions during the war.

 Build a Better Battleship
The three basic capabilities of a battleship are the ability to deliver significant punishment, the ability to withstand similar punishment and the ability to move to a combat area and within a combat area.
A revolutionary concept in battleship design called for "all or nothing armor." The concept was to place the maximum armored protection over the vital areas of the ship and leave the rest of the ship virtually unprotected.
Many of the old battleships were fitted with external "torpedo blisters" that were added to the hulls of these ships to provide extra layers of protection.

Contrary to what some authors have suggested, the origin of the design of the Bismarck Class battleships had nothing to do with the Bayern Class of World War I except for the fact that they were also equipped with eight 38cm guns in four twin turrets and a three-shaft propulsion plant.
The battleships of the Bismarck Class were the product of a warship development that had begun with the construction of the pocket battleships (Panzerschiffe) of the Deutschland Class in the late 20's and early 30's under the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles.
