In the county, the population was spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 5.30% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 28.50% from 45 to 64, and 16.40% who were 65 years of age or older.

Adam Keller, the county’s oil and gas planner, said the county’s decision to deny the permit came after several meetings with BP representatives Thursday and Friday morning in which BP was cooperative.
The county is obligated by state law to rule on an oil company’s application for a permit to drill within seven days of submission of the application, Keller said.
In this case, both deadlines fell within the holiday season, during which several representatives of the county planning staff, the town of Bayfield, and BP had plans to be out of town.

The lawsuit filed by the Maulers was part of an ongoing legal battle between the Maulers and Bayfield County going back to 1998, when the Maulers erected a wooden barrier to prevent snowmobiles from crossing what they alleged was their property using the trail.
The county won a declaratory judgment in state court against the couple, the decision affirming that the county had a legally valid interest in the right of way and enjoining the Maulers from blocking the trail.
The Court of Appeals case was argued September 17 of this year and a copy of the decision was made available to Bayfield County on October 31.

The Youth Board representatives from the Bayfield school system were chosen by their principal to introduce and escort Senator Herbert Kohl at an all-school assembly.
The Bayfield County Youth Board was featured in the UW-Extension 1998 Annual Report and as one of five case studies at the 1999 All-Faculty and Staff Conference.  The Board president and vice-president and two other Youth Board members participated in conference leadership roles.

 Wisconsin ATV Association - Bayfield county committee mulls trail system ordinance
Seeking more effective control over the ever-increasing number of ATVs and snowmobiles, Bayfield County is working on a new county ordinance aimed at addressing safety, recreational and environmental issues engendered by the use of motorized recreational vehicles.
The Bayfield County Tourism and Recreation Committee has designated a special committee to construct the proposed new ordinance, including Snowmobile/ATV Coordinator Pat Thornton, and representatives of the Bayfield County Sheriff's Department as well as the U.S. Forest Service, the Bayfield County Forestry Department and the Bayfield County Board.
The draft ordinance can be viewed on the Bayfield County web site at www.bayfieldcounty.org or by contacting the County's Tourism and Recreation office located at the lower level of the County Courthouse in Washburn.
