Baygen cut the noise by using a belt drive instead of a plastic gear wheel, although the radio plays for a slightly shorter period per wind (we had a difference of 8 minutes compared with the first model).

It is my understanding, the spring material was designed by NASA for unfolding solar panels on satellites when being deployed.
You can look at Baygen's web page at http://www.baygen.com They tell you the story on why it was developed and how to get a hold of one of their distributors.
I am curious about their price, and if > they are selling the version with shortwave.
