He seems most himself singing things like "My love oh she's a Cadillac." Bayleaf is a Big Rock album that is too ashamed to be a Big Rock album.
If the first solo albums of other lead-guitarists-in-famous-rock-bands are any precedent (Gossard is in Pearl Jam), the album was guaranteed to be a wank-fest of arena-sized proportions, with instrumental showboating, recycled blues riffs, and a general disinterest in songwriting and recording.
Instead of machismo and self-mythologization, the overriding ethos of Bayleaf is pretentious sobriety.

 Off the Record Stone Gossard
Bayleaf is an old-fashioned rock album that brings to mind any number of classic, testosterone-charged, early-’70s rockers; it’s tempered by the sort of shambling, semi-stoner sensibility that has become the purview of grunge sidemen from Seattle (see Wellwater Conspiracy).
Still, much of Bayleaf is unpracticed and fun — the sort of album people used to make merely because they wanted to.
Despite his singing ability, Gossard surrenders a good portion of Bayleaf’s vocals, including the catchy and slick first single, " Unhand Me, " to guest vocalist Ty Wilman — a move that can give the curious impression he’s merely visiting his own solo debut.

Of course, as indicated by my four-star rating, the album does stumble near the end--- "Hellbent" and "Fend It Off" aren't nearly as strong as the rest of the songs on Bayleaf, and they seem hastily tacked on, most likely due to their placement at the very end of the album.
And half of the people that *did* buy Bayleaf were probably disappointed half-hearted PJ listeners who wish the band would go back to their harder-rocking days of Ten and Vs.
As much as I like what he does with Pearl Jam, I didn't/don't want Bayleaf to be a PJ record.

To wrap up this review, «Bayleaf» is a very refreshing album that has a very strong music climate and it can really create a fresh environment around me whenever i'm listening to it.
I found «Bayleaf» to be a very refreshing, interesting and heterogeneous record, with each song sounding different from the other in such a way that it becomes impossible to label it according to its musical style.
The songwriting of «Bayleaf» is really good and the music itself is extremely original being, at the same time, experimental and very mature, with 'Stone Gossard' written all over it.

And, while the usual fears surrounding whether or not this will be Pearl Jam's last album ever are sure to needlessly pop up, it should be interesting to note that this probably will be Pearl Jam's last album under Sony's Epic label, as it will complete their contractual obligations.
Getting back to the band en masse, rumours of an album collecting their much sought-after B-sides and soundtrack work still continue to float around, but don't be surprised if things are kicked into high gear over the next few months.

Mostly though, it's Gossard on vocals and most of the instruments with a lot of help from his long-time protégé Pete Droge, who is credited as producer, though this album feels barely "produced."
Gossard's singing emphasizes that feel: it's offhand and lacking in the dramatic inflections associated with singers like, say, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, but it's subtly effective in its own way.
