Zamboanga del Sur was carved out from the former Zamboanga province that encompassed the entire peninsula in the southwestern Mindanao on September 17, 1952 by virtue of Republic Act 711.

ZAMBOANGA CITY—Five people were confirmed killed while one suffered a broken leg after the landslide in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur late Saturday, military’s Southern Command (Southecom) reported yesterday.
Maj. Gamal Hayudini, spokesman for military’s Southcom identified the fatalities as Marilyn Calino and her three-year-old daughter Julaima, both of Boboan in Bayog, Venancio Amang, Dodong Ramones and Erick Tumondong, of Barangay Concepcion in Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Earlier, Mayor Celso Lobregat promised to help the victims of the Bayog landslide while the Zamboanga chapter of the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), which the mayor leads, is raising funds for the victims of the landslides in Bayog and St. Bernard, Southern Leyte.

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Authorities have confirmed the death of five persons who were reported missing in a landslide last Saturday at a mining village in Zamboanga del Sur province.
Also confirmed dead by the Office of the Mayor of Bayog was Venancio Amang, 70, a resident of Tinago, Ozamis City.
The victims were inside the two houses that were buried by mud in a landslide Saturday night in Sitio Balabag, Barangay Depore in the town of Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur.

SIOCON, ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE (17 Nov. 2005) -- A delegation of 57 government officials from Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur today expressed confidence on the operations of TVI Resource Development (Phils.) Inc. (TVIRD), calling the company environmentally responsible and allaying concerns on the possible entry of TVI in their municipality.
Noting the controlled use of chemicals in the production process, they learned that, unlike small-scale mining operations prevalent in Bayog, mercury is not used at the Canatuan mine.
The group saw the company’s environmental management systems and initiatives to ensure the preservation of the soils and water as well as the restoration of forest denuded by years of slash-and-burn farming.

Superintendent Ramon Ochotorena, Zamboanga del Sur police chief, credited the quick response of the rescue teams for saving Merlyn Hasulen, who suffered broken limbs.
Ochotorena identified the five fatalities as Richard Sumondong, 31, owner and operator of the mining ball mill; Marilyn Bation, 33, and her three-year-old daughter July May; Telito Ramones, 23; and Melicio Calino, 70.

SEA marshals of the Philippine Coastguard (PCG), in coordination with members of a non-government organization (NGO), rescued at the local port Tuesday night 18 young women who were allegedly illegally recruited to work abroad.
Commander Roy Echeveria, chief of the Zamboanga Coastguard Station, said the victims were rescued aboard an inter-island vessel bound for Manila that came from Polloc, Cotabato.
The vessel was on a stopover in this city.
