Sugar Cane Festival, to celebrate the commencement of the sugar cane harvest, locally referred to as grinding.
Sugar cane is a principal crop grown by New Iberia farmers.
The Spanish settlers called the town "Nueva Iberia", in honour of the Iberian Peninsula, while the French referred to the town as "Nouvelle Ibérie," and the English called it "New Town." The state legislature resolved the situation in 1847, naming the town New Iberia.

The Houma village on Bayou Cane, called Whiskey Point by the local settlers [ a corruption of Ouisky the Houma word for cane ] was initially established as a seasonal settlement, probably while they were still at Verrets.
It is the Bayou Cane village and the Indians that lived there that became the namesake of the town founded in 1834.
The bayou cut through the backlands of the tribes Bayou Cane settlement, hence it would be logical to assume that the tribe at Bayou Cane and the tribe that filed the landclaim where one in the same.

Cane Bayou is a good canoe trip for beginner paddlers and a trip that all paddlers will enjoy.
Put-in on the southwest side of the bridge where U.S. 190 crosses Cane Bayou and paddle south for about 1.5 miles to the mouth of the bayou and Lake Ponchartrain.
There are no other rentals available in the area, but the the bayou is in the Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will occasionally lead canoe trips.

Taylor Bayou rises sixteen miles west of Port Arthur in central Jefferson County (at 29°51' N, 94°11' W) and flows east for eighteen miles to its mouth on the Port Arthur Canal at Port Arthur (at 29°50' N, 93°58' W).
Taylor Bayou is formed by the junction of the North and South forks of Taylor Bayou.
Although saltwater barrier dams and a diversion canal were established as early as 1914, the continued diversion of water from Taylor Bayou and the construction of deep-draft channels to Beaumont and Port Arthur have occasionally forced salt water into the bayou.

Those items were among trash pulled from the bayou and the marshes near the lake shoreline by an expedition of 16 people in eight canoes that aimed to remove some of the urban debris left scattered in waterways by Hurricane Katrina.
But more debris began to appear along the bayou close to the lake and on its shore: wine and beer bottles, cans, plastic foam, five-gallon buckets, tubs, a 55-gallon plastic drum and a green plastic trash container – more than could be held in the canoes.
The hurricane’s impact was evident in the matted grasses that used to stand head-high and in the empty treetops that had held osprey nests until Katrina blasted them away.
