The Bayou Teche is a 125-mile long waterway of great cultural significance in south central Louisiana.
Bayou Teche was the Mississippi River's main course when it developed a delta about, 2,800 to 4,500 years ago.
After the levees were built along the Atachafalaya River in the 1930s the Teche, and the rice farms located along the bayou, suffered a drastic reduction in fresh water.

In celebration of the above legend, the City of Breaux Bridge commissioned a 20 foot snake sculpture, which depicts all of the towns along Bayou Teche, and a commemorative marker to remind visitors of the legend.
The sculpture, which is located in Parc des Ponts de Pont Breaux, highlights the significance of the Bayou to Acadiana, as the bayou once served as the primary highway for the Acadiana region.

The Bayou Vermilion, or the Vermilion River is you prefer, is a “consequent stream” or a "tidal river", which means that the Vermilion was formed from the bottom up.
It is frequently referred to as the "urban corridor" of 8 miles that passes through the city of Lafayette and the "rural corridor" of the remaining 25.5 miles.
The importance of the Vermilion as a means of transportation and commerce declined with the introduction of the railroad and the paving of all highways leading into Lafayette in 1936.
