Hernando: Rarest of beauties feels the strain
Bayport - where the county plans to expand the park, replace the two old boat ramps with four new ones and double the parking space for boat trailers - is just one of many battlegrounds between the forces of preservation and development.
The Bayport Hotel was built on the island in 1842, the same year as passage of the Armed Occupation Act, which opened Central Florida to settlement.
That Bayport didn't change much in the aftermath may have been, as Kilby said, because the Whitehurst family scared off potential buyers by insisting that all of its 2,100 acres, including marshland, be purchased as a package.

History of Bayport, Hernando County, Florida
Not far from the road into Bayport, and still accessible by foot, the wilderness is creeping up on it, and some of the tombstones are a bit askew, as the accompanying pictures will show.
There are said to be more people buried in the Bayport cemetery than are accounted for by headstones, the graves having long since been leveled and eradicated by the inroads of time and nature.
Cannon reports that several headstones from the Bayport Cemetery were found in a local pawn shop and were court ordered to be given to the Pioneer Museum, which now has the headstones on display at the May-Stringer House in Brooksville.

Hernando: Mood at meeting: Preserve park's charm
Some present called Bayport -- home to pines and palms that obscure several archaeological deposits from the prehistoric to Civil War eras -- the last beautiful place in Hernando County.
Despite the unanswered questions, resident J. Adrian Kilby, whose family has owned land at Bayport since 1852, said he was encouraged by the meeting and felt Fagan understood the arguments being made by those against a too intrusive design.
Kilby also said Bayport's value lies in it being largely undisturbed, and he said he intends to monitor progress on a final design closely.

His father was a land speculator in Georgia; in Florida he was a farmer, a justice of the peace, an election inspector in 1845, a Democratic State Convention Delegate in 1852, and finally a Representative from Hernando County to the Florida House from 1856 to 1859.
