  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Bazooka Tooth
Bazooka Tooth is underground rapper Aesop Rock's third album, released under the Definitive Jux label in 2003.
Bazooka Tooth, his follow-up to 2001's Labor Days, is his second full length for the label.
Bazooka Tooth's sophisticated verse is as challenging as any scholarly work, as Aesop confidently spits fragmented rhymes that could conceivably marry TV Guide with characters from Eliot's "The Waste Land." The album is littered with relevant allusions to a society that's so media saturated it has to be real.

The hip-hop super-hero Bazooka Tooth continues his mission to blaze clean the streets, raising his gnarly grin again in the face of false-prophets.
From the early self-distributed records Music For Earthworms and Apple Seed, his first album Float on Mush Records all the way to his Bazooka Tooth opus his singular voice has filtered tales of Long Island and New York City life through a highly personal lens.
"Bazooka Tooth's music is mainly his own, and his densely layered squiggles, samples and hardcore percussion are the aural equivalent of graffiti.

A few days after a desperate request for a Bazooka Tooth lyric sheet, I received a strange response from Aesop Rock’s publicist: “He’s working on one, but it won’t be ready anytime soon.
And so assessing Bazooka Tooth may be a futile effort in some respects, since Aesop Rock’s post-Float output – namely Labor Days, the Daylight EP and the new record – are all above reproach for those into willfully complicated collages of a noirish New York City landscape as reminiscent of Predator as anything post-9/11.
Instead, Bazooka Tooth is a 70-minute revolving door, in which you repeatedly enter into a song just long enough to stumble out with a handful of choice images and a vague sense of its sonic makeup.

About forty-five seconds into "Bazooka Tooth" - the opening and title track - Aesop Rock exclaims "Oh my God; journalists across the globe are officially critiquing my first eight bars".
Recalling neither the personal insecurities of "Float", nor the urban paranoia of "Labor Days", Aesop Rock speaks on "Bazooka Tooth" with a kind of desperate confidence that seems rooted in the fact that there is no hope left.
Among "Bazooka Tooth's" low points are times when Aesop changes his vocal delivery to such an extent that he begins to sound almost like Eminem, and this is not a style that sits well with his usual flow or with the music he chooses.

Bazooka Tooth - Aesop Rock | Album Reviews > HipHopDX.com
“Bazooka Tooth” starts off in almost melodramatic fashion that is reminiscent of the “Float” days but with an abrupt beat change, reality hits and Kansas is no where to be found.
Lyrically, no one is better at twisting off-tempo poetic rants that seemingly give the listener the finger while teasing him or her to indulge deeper to understand the root of a message, that may or may not exist.
Bazooka Tooth does vary significantly from his past work but that doesn’t make it any worse, in fact if it’s given some time it could evolve to be right up there with his two previous full length efforts.

Stream-of-consciousness lyrics, stuttering beats, and troglodyte bass lines are the bedrock to Aesop Rock's BAZOOKA TOOTH, a collection of almost freeform rapping that boasts some fashion-forward sampling in a grinding collision of words and found sounds.
The title track is characteristic of the whole collection, with its elastic bass track underpinning an eccentric sound collage that's an effective counterpoint to Rock's half-heard lyrics.
If you're used to some of the more rhythmically straight-laced sounds and the guns-drugs-hoes subject matter coming from East and West Coasts, not to mention the Dirty South, then BAZOOKA TOOTH may come as a shock to the system-which is precisely the intention.

Less than a minute into "Bazooka Tooth," underground MC Aesop Rock is critic-dissing: "Oh my God/journalists across the globe are officially critiquing my first eight bars." Now that the young rapper is semi-famous, he's striking the sort of battle stance he avoided on his first two albums; this man is "abstract" no more.
As in his earlier work, on "Bazooka Tooth" Rock uses his nasal-topped baritone to deliver near-freestyle content that's all allusion and thumbed thesaurus.
"Tooth" is mostly self-produced, resulting in beats that are even denser than on the typical (that is, typically difficult) Def Jux release.

The Yale Herald - October 17, 2003 - aesop rock - bazooka tooth
Bazooka Tooth contains plenty of Ace's aggressive, nasal, multi-syllabic delivery.
Instead of his Labor Days manifesto—"Life's not a bitch, life is a beautiful woman"—the Aesop on Bazooka, reborn out of the ashes of Sept. 11 and more personal disasters, keeps it simpler: "Life sucks, dickhead."
While fans will argue over the merits of Aesop's new lyrics (fewer mythological metaphors, more hip hop references) and new production style (less beautiful, more interesting), few will contest that his use of numerous guests, musical interludes, and a few catchy choruses adds some welcome variety lacking on previous albums.

Bazooka Tooth, the latest release from New York-based underground rapper Aesop Rock, will never be found in the ‘easy listening’ section of your local record store.
Bazooka Tooth, which follows the rappers critically acclaimed release, Labor Days and its hit single, “Daylight,” takes things even further out, shifting gears and turning corners with ferocity and a velocity that leaves critics’ heads spinning.
As an MC, Aesop Rock is a skillful, confident spinner of words, and his music is blissfully free of the ego-driven lyrics that characterize many of today’s Hip-Hop hits.

Aesop Rock - Bazooka Tooth Review - sputnikmusic
After shocking critics of underground rap with his 2001 Definitive Jux debut, Labor Days, expectations for Aesop Rock's second DJ album Bazooka Tooth were high.
The edgy lyrics that defined his 2001 success are still strong (when you can actually make them out), but the beats are lacking the right kind of feel, and ultimately that is the big problem with this album.
It seems Bazooka Tooth takes on a different approach, using basement-level beats, rather than the catchy samples that defined Labor Days.

Bazooka Tooth is Brooklyn-based Aesop Rock’s fifth album, and his second long-player on doper-than-dope undie label Def Jux.
But despite — and perhaps partly because of — this, Bazooka Tooth is a damn good album.
The beats are pure multi-layered phatness, fashioned as fans have come to expect from Def Jux - frenetically aggressive, PE-recalling, neck-snap inducing, and all infused with a dangerous dose of space funk and computer game sickness.

As one of the finest MCs to emerge in the past several years, Aesop Rock (real name Ian Bavitz) has been lauded as everything from hip hop's underground messiah to a literary genius (when he rarely reads), and neither of those plaudits is entirely unthinkable when put into context.
With the release of Bazooka Tooth, most of which he produced on his own, he's raised the bar even further.
