Bebop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bebop or bop is a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos and improvisation based on harmonic structure rather than melody.
Bebop was also heavily characterized by the flatted fifth.
Bebop differed drastically from the highly organized compositions and “solid, yet springing 4/4 propulsion” of the swing era, and was instead characterized by fast tempos, complex harmonies, intricate melodies, and rhythm sections that laid down a steady beat only on the bass and the drummer’s ride cymbal (Rosenthal 12).

Cowboy Bebop was popular enough that a movie, Cowboy Bebop: Tengoku no Tobira (Knockin' on Heaven's Door), was commissioned and released in Japan in 2001 and later released in the United States as Cowboy Bebop: The Movie in 2003.

Jazz History - Bebop   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Disregarding elaborate big band arrangements central to the swing era style, bebop musicians streamlined their bands with four to six musicians, creating a vehicle specifically designed for exploring the improvisational elements of music.
Staples of the bebop repertoire included such tunes as "Ornithology," "Donna Lee," "Groovin' High," and "Hot House." Their fast pulse and enriched harmonic vocabulary defined a new direction for jazz, no longer a dance music but a new art form unto itself.
As the popularity of bebop grew, critics and jazz fans came to view it as a challenging new art form.

The creation of the musical language of bebop is generally credited to Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Clarke, and others who took part in jams after finishing more formal gigs elsewhere.
Though, like many older jazz musicians, Louis Armstrong expressed a dislike for bebop, he was revered by many boppers, who sometimes "quoted" his musical phrases by incorporating fragments of Armstrong's recorded improvisations in their own songs.
As the bebop language developed, these "altered chords" were used less for coloration than as fundamental building blocks of new harmonic "spaces." The soloist's implied switch from an original to a reconstructed space created a narrative of "liberation."

Marc Sabatella's Jazz Improvisation Primer: Bebop
The birth of bebop in the 1940's is often considered to mark the beginning of modern jazz.
While, as with previous styles, much use was made of the blues and popular songs of the day, including songs by George Gershwin and Cole Porter, the original compositions of the bebop players began to diverge from popular music for the first time, and in particular, bebop was not intended to be dance music.
Many of the bebop standards are based on the chord progressions of other popular songs, such as "I Got Rhythm", "Cherokee", or "How High The Moon".

They were the perfect fit, because they had similar ideas about the music and because Gillespie was one of the few trumpeters who could keep up with Parker, both in understanding of harmonic theory as well as virtuosity.
Unlike many bebop musicians, who were separatists, Dizzy actively went out and drummed up support and won friends to the music.
