A New Method For Saving Large Beached Whales
If the larger whales are stranded near the waterline, the first step may not be needed, or it could be used for pulling it backward just a few feet to the shallow water, where the forward towing harness arrangement is then used.
Once the whale is on the belly pad, during most of the dragging, the belly pad is basically pulled, with the whale riding on top of it.
Maybe, once the corset is on the whale and a belly pad (or its substitute) is lying on the beach behind the whale, a group of strong volunteers could attempt to pull the whale the 20 feet rearward onto the belly pad.

 Questions
The main predators of whales are the killer whale, certain species of shark (such as the tiger shark or the great white shark) and the polar bear that has been known to attack beluga whales in the Arctic.
Therefore, whales that eat krill and copepods may be required to transform the fat and sugar in their bodies to produce water to maintain the internal equilibrium necessary for their survival.
Whales have developed other adaptations to overcome the inherent conflict between their need to breathe and their aquatic lifestyle, as well as to overcome all constraints brought about by life under water.

Newsvine - New Zealand Rescuers Save Beached Whale
WELLINGTON — Rescue workers saved one of two whales stranded on a New Zealand beach but were forced to shoot the other after efforts to guide it back to sea failed, a conservation official said Friday.
One of the whales swam back to deep water with guidance from rescuers, but efforts to steer the other failed and the distressed mammal was shot late Thursday to save it from further suffering, he said.
The department's regional biodiversity manager, Vivienne McGlynn, said the whales were roughly the same size and were possibly a mother and calf, "but that's an assumption." The bigger of the two whales, about 10 feet long, died on the beach, she said.

The seven dead whales were found to have inner ear damage, which scientists said might have ruined their sense of direction and ability to navigate.
Whales with inner ear damage can become disoriented and mistakenly swim too close to shore, beaching themselves and eventually dying.
Although scientists have long suspected that whale beachings were linked to Navy activities, the March beaching has provided some of the strongest evidence to date reinforcing that suspicion.
