The Dia:Beacon is on 31 acres along the Hudson and is a five-minute walk from a Metro North train station.
Beacon is an economically depressed town about an hour north of Manhattan, and its location offered the opportunity to combine culture and urban renewal.
The Beacon museum’s expansive galleries have been specifically designed for the display of the artworks to which Dia is committed, many of which, because of their character or scale, could not be easily accommodated by more conventional museums.

The station, nicknamed the ``Amshack'' by its workers, was a stark white building with a row of chairs along the wall, a desk and a bulletin board.
Trains remained an interest, but, as with so many of us, his youthful fascination was replaced by adult responsibilities.
They shared train stories and, by instinct, all turned to the window whenever they heard the heavy clacking approach from the distance.

Today, the few passenger trains that run between New York City and Chicago pass the old terminal slowly, stopping at a squat suburban station where the seats are plastic and the food comes from vending machines.
In 1929 the station handled 200 trains a day.
Completed in 1929, the station mirrored the city's mood, said Susan A. McCartney, president of the Preservation Coalition of Erie County.

Longtime environmental activist and folksinger Pete Seeger and New York architect Meta Brunzema have formed a unique alliance to construct a “river pool,” whose intent is not simply to bring swimmers back to the river but to promote a broader sense of river stewardship.
The Beacon Sloop Club—an organizing entity for the river pool, which counts Seeger among its founding members—had organized a one-mile swim from the city of Newburgh, across the river, to Beacon to raise money for the pool’s construction, now planned for summer 2005.
