nother type of beadwork was invented by native women in the early 20th century: single-needle bead weaving, called "peyote beadwork," because it was first used widely on handles of peyote religious regalia.
Beadwork on such items often reminds the owner of a personal vision or sign or the meaning of a personal name, it is not only to make them beautiful.

Beadwork as we know it and (should) think of it, is a modern art form.
Since it can be established that beadwork beads did not exist in the Plains in quantities enough for beadwork traditions prior to the mid-1800s, it stands to reason that not much beadwork was made by Indians (nor anyone else, except possibly some Asians), prior to this time.
On the whole, however, Indian beadwork is a unique expression of art, created by Indians and that's what should be admired and celebrated, for its own merits.

Maps help to show the trade routes between bead-manufacturing centers, and the authors describe the various processes of making beads worldwide.
With over six hundred illustrations, information on collecting and conserving beadwork, and on where to see public collections, this is the first survey to reveal the wealth and diversity of traditional beadwork from around the world.
