Topic: Beagle Aircraft

  Beagle
Beagling has been referred to as "the poor person's foxhunting", as a beagle pack (30-40 dogs) is followed on foot, not horseback.
Beagles have superb noses and, despite their self-willed temperament, are sometimes used as sniffer dogs for drug detection.
H.M.S. Beagle is also the name of the ship in which Charles Darwin undertook the travels during which he made many observations which became important for his formulation of his theory of evolution.

The aircraft was not all that badly damaged and was quickly repaired, to be given a good looking over and, according to the story, used for covert flights over the mainland.
Since the EAF didn't have aircrews trained for their Beagles at the time, the bombers were sent to friendly countries to sit out the war, which was fortunate since the EAF was chewed up fairly badly in the conflict.
Aircraft systems were of course improved overall, though the cannon armament scheme of the Il-28 was retained.

 Auster
Auster Aircraft Limited began as Taylorcraft Aeroplanes (England) Limited in 1939 making light observation aircraft designed by the Taylorcraft Aircraft Corporation of America at the Britannia Works, Thurmaston near Leicester, England.
When Beagle Aircraft bought the company in June 1961 the successful high wing design was developed still further as the Terrier and - with a nosewheel - the Airedale.
The air observation duties, insurgency and casualty evacuation roles performed by Austers and similar light aircraft were generally taken over by light helicopters from the mid 1960s.

Graduate Aircraft Design Education   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Aircraft design is a synthesis of many disciplines, each of which must be understood and correctly applied to achieve the correct balance essential for optimum performance.
A competent aircraft designer must know enough about those specialisations so that he or she will be able to balance them to arrive at a whole aircraft optimum design, rather than one that may be optimum from, say, a structural or aerodynamic view-point.
The theoretical knowledge is thus reinforced by flying in the aircraft during the flight-test manoeuvres and is then further reinforced by on-board flight data acquisition, and subsequent analysis.

 B121 Pup Series 1
Thus, if an aircraft has damage in excess of those generic or minor repair schemes published in the Overhaul and Repair Manual, a solution may already be available.
To keep the fleet of Beagle Pup aircraft airworthy and able to fly on into the future requires the Type Design Organisation, aircraft owners, operators and maintenance organisations to work together to solve any new technical problems as they arise.
The Company’s ability to do so, however, relies heavily on liaison and co-operation with aircraft owners, who must advise when they experience a problem for the first time or contact the Company if they have any questions about support of their aircraft.

Although the squadrons and pilots were of the Royal Artillery, RAF ground crews maintained the aircraft.
The Auster's main roles were artillery spotting, supply drops, liaison, casualty evacuation and photographic reconnaissance, for which it was well-suited; its short take-off and landing (STOL) abilities enabled it to operate from small landing fields.

James Milne, a senior executive with BICC (British Insulated Calendar Cables) required the aircraft to survey the terrain between Abadan and Teheran where BICC were engaged in running major electric power lines from the generating stations in the Gulf to the capital.
I asked the reason for this, and it was because the IFR landing minimum at Toussus was 5 km and aircraft were not allowed to designate Orly as their alternate for landing back (where the landing minima were lower due to the presence of radar and ILS).
Until that is officially completed to his satisfaction, the aircraft remains the property of the manufacturer, and I am the manufacturer’s representative and the pilot in charge of the aircraft.” They had to agree to that, as we produced paperwork to prove all of it.
