Topic: Beale ciphers

Beale ciphers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Beale ciphers are a set of three ciphertexts, one of which allegedly states the location of a buried treasure of gold and silver estimated to be worth over 30 million US dollars in today's money.
It is claimed that Beale placed the ciphertexts in an iron box, and left it with a reliable person, a Lynchburg innkeeper, Robert Morriss, near Montvale in Bedford County, Virginia (where the treasure is said to have been buried).
Beale promised to mail Morriss the keys, but they were never received; perhaps Beale died before he could do so.

Beale, whoever he was, numbered the words of the DOI and used these numbers as his cipher elements.
Beale, who remained, soon became a favored and popular guest; his social disposition and friendly demeanor rendered him extremely popular with every one, particularly the ladies, and a pleasant and friendly intercourse was quickly established between them.
Beale said in the letter that he traveled to the spot where the gold was found and established an organized method of mining the precious metal.

For example, two substitution cipher alphabets could be defined and used on alternating letters of a plaintext, with all the even-numbered letters enciphered by one cipher alphabet and all the odd-numbered letters enciphered by the other.
When Beale left for the second time, he left a locked box with Morriss, along with written instructions that the box contained "papers of value and importance" and that it was not to be opened for ten years.
Beale made two such trips, burying the treasure in the Lynchburg area, and then left the enciphered documents with Morriss so that somebody would be able to arrange the distribution of the treasure to relatives if any disaster occurred to the adventurers.

 Beale Treasure
Then, according to Beale’s note, they struck lucky: “The party, encamped in a small ravine, were preparing their evening meal, when one of the men discovered in a cleft of the rocks something that had the appearance of gold.
Hence, Beale was instructed to find a reliable person, who could be confided in to carry out their wishes in the event of their sudden death, and Beale selected Morriss to be that person.
Beale’s note said that the key required to decipher the sheets would be posted to Beale by a third party, but it never materialised, and so Morriss was forced to unscramble the three sheets from scratch.

The Beale ciphers remain one of the most perplexing mysteries in the world of codebreaking.
At age 88, understanding that his life was coming to an end, he explained the existence of the ciphers to a friend, who subsequently published a pamphlet explaining the mystery.
Many have speculated that the Beale ciphers are a hoax, but others continue to try their hand at breaking the ciphers.

It is easy for quantum cryptographers to sneer at something that is as archaic as the Beale ciphers, but the Beale cipher has something in its favor that no other system currently possesses-it has been shown to be literally unbreakable, not just in theory, but in practice.
Since the Beale ciphers have resisted attacks for a long time, it would not be improper to study this method with greater vigor.

Beale used the first letter of each word to spell the encoded text and the corresponding number of the word with that letter to create the cipher used in cipher 2.
It is generally believed that the remaining ciphers are encoded text, however there is no way to prove historically that the numbers are indeed valid.

Although I have my own beliefs about what the solution to the ciphers may be, I feel it is important for everyone to reach their own conclusion.
In October 1980, Jim Gillogly had a paper published in Cryptologia, a cryptography journal, that presented his theory for why the Beale Ciphers are a hoax.
He feels because of these long odds, that this is proof that the ciphers are either a hoax, or need another layer of decryption in order to reveal the solution.
