  The Waimakariri River
The Waimakariri is one of the larger braided rivers in New Zealand.
Its flows are controlled by the weather in its upper basin, the stronger and drier the Nor-West wind is on the plains, the greater the flow be from heavy north west rain in the upper basin.
The Eyre River rises in the western foothills and, unlike the Waimakariri river, is largely fed by easterly rains.

We are looking across the Waimakariri River valley, which runs from left to right (west to east).
The river reflecting the sun to the north is the Bealey River.
The railway bridge is to the east and so road and railway run on opposite sides of the river.

Bealey Spur is in the Southern Alps, and gives amazing views of the Upper Waimakariri and Otira valleys.

Their homestead was on the west bank of the Cass River and most of the domain of the run was remote from the station because of the presence of Mount Horrible and the difficulties of getting around Corner Knob.
This river is fed by streams from the Armstrong Glacier on the eastern flank of Mt Armstrong near the Main Divide and joins the Otira River above the was opened.

 Arthurs Pass
This track on the summit of Arthur's Pass, offers a good introduction to the sub-alpine and alpine plants of this area.  The alpine flowers are in bloom from November to February.  The evenly graded track passes through a variety of alpine herbs, tussocks and shrubs.  It also gives good views of the surrounding mountains.
From here you can scramble up the river bed to go further up the valley.  Avalanched snow often collects at the head of the valley in winter and remains throughout the year.  This forms a false glacier which is under-cut by the Bealey River flowing below it.
The highest mountain is Mt Murchison 2,408 metres at the headwaters of the White River a tributary of the Waimakariri headwaters.

Rangitata River, Mid Canterbury: In the 12 hours to midday today (Nov 14) 220 mm of rain was recorded in the headwaters of the Rangitata River.
At 2.00pm 402 cumecs was recorded at the gorge and the river is rising and may rise to approximately 1200 to 1500 cubic metres per second.
People using the river and riverbed areas, particularly in the lower reaches near the coast, should be careful they are not trapped on islands cut off by rising river levels.

Soon you cross the Waimakariri River bridge where on a clear day there is a magnificent view of mountains at the head of the valley.
Crossing the wide bed of the Waimakariri River was a major hurdle for travellers before the bridge was built, and travellers sometimes stayed until the river level fell at Klondyke Corner at the north end of the bridge or at the Bealey Glacier Hotel south of the river.

Travel in the Deception River is in the riverbed and involves numerous crossings and scrambling on quite bouldery terrain in the upper sections.
The weekend trip started with the customary 7pm Friday meeting at the Shell on Papanui Rd. This was my first club trip to the Arthur's Pass hut, and I was impressed by a number of things, including the facilities in the hut and the wealth of Wilderness magazines.
The main group enthusiastically made their way through the Bealey river near to the confluence with the Mingha River.

 WAIMAKARIRI RIVER - 1966 Encyclopaedia of New Zealand
This Canterbury river lies between the Rakaia and Hurunui Rivers, with its catchment on the main divide and its mouth 8 miles north of Christchurch.
The larger tributaries to the Waimakariri all flow from the north and are, from west to east, the Bealey, Poulter, and Esk.
Like the other large Canterbury rivers, such as the Rakaia and Rangitata, the Waimakariri is snow fed and generally unaffected, or but little affected, by south-west rain.

Rain on the West Coast of the South Island caused surface flooding on SH 6 between Hokitika and Haast on 29 November.
Rivers swelled to high levels on the east side of the main divide, and forty-five huts near the Rangitata River mouth were flooded as raised river levels, combined with a high tide, caused the lagoon to overflow.
SH 56 at Opiki near Palmerston North was closed and Bryants Bridge on SH 57 near Palmerston North was reduced to one lane because of flooding.

Civil defence staff were on alert last night as rapidly rising Canterbury rivers threatened to flood.
In Arthurs Pass, a household was evacuated as a precaution because of the rapidly rising Bealey River, said Selwyn District Council civil defence manager Wilson Brown.
The rivers rose after strong northwest winds brought heavy rain to the area.

Bealey Chasm and Valley: A small rock gorge in the Bealey River, a few minutes walk through beech forest and an easy ascent through bush and subalpine vegetation to the riverbed, to end under the sheer Bealey Face of Mount Rolleston.
The pass's namesake, Arthur Dudley Dobson, discovered this new route to the West Coast goldfields in the summer of 1864 when intense pressure was on for a more expedient route than the longer Harper Pass at the head of the Taramakau River.
Few real tourist walks are available, but the most notable are to the Devil's Punchbowl and Bridal Veil Falls, and into the fearsomely named Bealey Chasm.

Turn right at saddle (Corner Knob) 2.3 Km west of Cass river bridge, cross the Waimakariri river over Mt White bridge and follow Mt white road to turn off 100m short of the Poulter river bridge.

Above 365, lying parallel to it, was its tender, and on top of the tender lay a saturated A 4-6-2 boiler, and the remains of a 4 wheel L wagon.
My next stop was the Bealey River Bridge, where railway artifacts were legend… but this area too, was subject to the constant changes imposed by God and man. At this beautiful alpine valley it was once possible to find numerous remains of rare antique locomotives, but sadly, today, only a few remain visible.

Three days of good weather forecast, started with a tramp up the Mingha River to Goat Pass, then straight up to Lake Mavis, where I camped beside the partly frozen lake.
From there it was a pleasant stroll down the Robert Ridge back to the carpark.

The six trampers, from the United States, Canada and South Africa, are staying at Christian youth camp Youth With a Mission, in Oxford.

The Lewis Pass crosses the main divide from the northern end of the Canterbury Plains, and can be approached either from Kaikoura to the north or Christchurch to the south.
It passes through typically barren east coast terrain along the river valley of the Bealey River, rising gently all the while, until it reaches a short sharp rise to the Maruia Springs hotel located just over the top.
The contrast between the two sides is sudden and dramatic, as you leave the barren rain shadow country of the east and plunge into the thick wet rain forests of the West Coast.

Inspector Bob Palmer, of the police southern communications centre in Christchurch, said the man's details could not be released until police ensured his family had been notified.
Mr Palmer said there had been several reports of roofs being blown off houses in Hanmer Springs and the Ferry Bridge over the Waiau River was closed for a time after being blocked by a fallen tree.
Trees were across the road between Arthur's Pass and Klondyke Corner on SH73 and the Bealey River had breached its banks, making the road impassable, police said.
