It is essential to monitor emittance evolution of the beams in the Main Injector before transfer to the Tevatron in real-time.
Luminosity is a very strong function of the beam emittance and as such, it is very essential to monitor and maintain low emittance and high brightness during the acceleration.
Emittance calculations are done on the acquired data, and the results are displayed together with intensity values in a table.

It is becoming increasingly important to carryout a thorough experimental study of wakefield effects on the beam before full-scale construction of the main linacs.
We propose to study the generation of low emittance electron beams and the wakefield behavior at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) facility in ANL.
Such beams are suitable for measurement of the wakefield effect.

We measured the emittance of the beam using flying wires when the Main Injector fractional tunes were 0.425 in the horizontal and 0.415 in the vertical.
The results are presented in figure 4 which measures a horizontal emittance of 9.47 pi mm-mr and a vertical emittance of 8.14 pi mm-mr, in the first pass of the flying wire.
The emittance at this stage is shown in figure 5, where the first pass values of the emittance are 17 pi mm-mr and 8.76 pi mm-mr in the horizontal and vertical respectively, i.e,the horizontal emittance has doubled.

PICOSECOND-RESOLUTION ‘SLICE’ EMITTANCE MEASUREMENT OF ELECTRON-BUNCHES
In the emittance compensation technique, suggested by Bruce Carlsten [2], the observed emittance growth due to linear components of space charge forces in the photoinjector is compensated by passing the electron beam through a laminar-flow beam-waist.
The measured normalized rms emittances of the three slices are 3.5 ± 1.1, 2.8 ± 1.1 and 2.3 ± 1.1 for the front, center and end of the bunch slices, respectively.
This is an emittance compensated beam from the ATF photoinjector.

Beam diagnostic instrumentation needs to meet several challenges: The bunch length and longitudinal profile should be measured on a single bunch to characterize the instantaneous, peak current along the bunch.
The upper limit for the useful beam emittance of the UNILAC is given by the finite acceptance of the SIS during the injection process.
This causes a modulation of the transverse beam displacement, which is observed at a downstream BPM and associated with a direct analysis of the modes at the HOM couplers.

Emittance exchanges are used at the beginning of the system to reduce the longitudinal emittance; however, these exchanges also increase the size of the beam, and complete design of the necessary transport and low-frequency rf remains a major challenge.
The longitudinal emittance shows an initial rise and fall as particles not within the rf bucket increase in amplitude and are later lost, and then an approach to an asymptotic value set by the bucket size.
The longitudinal emittance should rise due to straggling and the negative slope of energy loss with energy, but, since the rf bucket is already full, we see a steady loss of particles instead of an emittance growth.

Using epsilon=6 pi beta(s) sigma_theta^2, an expression for the rate of emittance growth is: epsilon'_h = 6 pi beta(s)/tau (t/L_R) (13.6/(p beta))^2 Here beta(s) is the beta function at the target, t the target thickness, L_R the radiation length, p and beta refer to the beam, tau the revolution period.
For a thin fiber target the rms beam size at the laser is d theta where theta is the beam divergence angle and d the distance to the laser.
At E835 the rms beam divergence was approximately 0.2 mr and the distance to the stripper foil 24 m for an rms size of 4.8 mm.

Low Emittance Operation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Experimental studies of low emittance lattice configurations, carried out during recent accelerator development periods, clearly indicate that substantial reduction in beam size is both feasible and operationally sound.
The horizontal beam size observed with optical monitors at dipole magnets decreased by a factor of two to four, to values as low as 125 microns rms.
Since some User experiments may not benefit from low emittance operation, it was particularly significant that low emittance was achieved in these tests with essentially the same beam current, lifetime, and stability as the standard beam.

The high quality (small transverse emittance and momentum resolution) of the internal beam is exploited and vacuum windows are not required to separate the machine vacuum from the interaction region.
This is particularly important for studies of electromagnetic processes such as antihydrogen formation since the cross section increases as Z^2 and the beam emittance growth increases only as the inverse radiation length (slower than Z^2).
Because of the requirements of the experiment and machine environment the target must have a 1 mm profile with minimal halo as seen by the stored beam, must have a density consistent with the stochastic cooling power of the machine, must be self-healing and must not pollute the 10^-9 T machine vacuum.

Experiments are under way to explore the properties of beam diffraction radiation and to use the knowledge gained to develop novel ways to accurately measure important beam parameters such as bunch dimension, bunch shape and emittance.
Some of the beam dimensions are of the order of a few nm (at the i.p.), and to be able to reach these small sizes, the beams have to be tightly controlled and understood from their very inception onward.
In addition, we propose measure the electron beam transverse dimension through the analysis of the angular distribution of DR. A simple CCD camera can measure the angular polarization of DR. The total intensity of normal angular distribution has a minimum value when the beam passes through the center of slit.

RMS Emittance growth due to Intrinsic Quadrupole Aberrations   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Formulas are derived for the rms emittance growth due to intrinsic aberrations in magnetic and electrostatic quadrupoles.
In fact as soon as an ideal beam has passed through the first non-linear element, the initial assumption that there are no higher order correlations, is violated for all subsequent elements.
In general, since the emittance growth varies as such a high power of beam size, growth is only a concern, if at all, in a very few quadrupoles where the beam is largest.

The inherent emittance and brightness of the electron beam from the RF injectors are limited by the temporal and spatial variation of the applied RF field at the cathode while the electrons are emitted and transported.
Another technique to minimize the emittance growth due to varying field is to use a pulsed electric field at the cathode.
