  The Beamrider Network
As the Beamrider passes near each of the booster stations, additional cargo, passenger and resupply pods are accelerated to match velocity with the beamrider and/or are dropped off by the 'rider to be decelerated into the target system.
The first section of what would eventually become the Beamrider Network was conceived shortly after the discovery of the brown dwarfs Yin and Yang along a rough line between the Sol system and Ross 128 in 280 a.t..
Even the largest beamriders rarely have a complement of passengers and crew larger than a few hundred people, most of them travelling in biostasis (It is common practice on most ships for passengers and crew to spend 1/3 of the trip awake.

 Beamrider | The A.V. Club
As a beamrider, your job is to get rid of that shield so you can get the girl and finish your homework before dinner.
Your beamrider is equipped with unlimited short-range laser lariats, which are good for shooting alien ships, but can be blocked by craft that are helpfully called "blockers." You also have laser torpedoes that will destroy anything.
Enduring contribution to gaming history: Beamrider is one of the very few titles that was successfully ported from Colecovision to the 2600, losing almost nothing in the translation.

 The Deeper Covenant
The Deeper Covenant began as the descendants of the construction crew of the first beamrider after they escaped the solar system to the brown dwarf Yin during the Nanodisaster.
Deepers (as they are generally called) have a deep social ethos of cooperation and service in general and to maintaining and extending the Beamrider Network in particular.
They are a relaxed, but hardworking culture that considers itself a part of modern civilization, but at one remove from it (unlike their very distant cousins the Backrounders and Hiders).

As the blurb says, Beamrider is indeed the proud owner of an animated 3-D environment (a key selling point for a VCS game) and, best of all, it's a shoot'em-up - hurrah!
I first played Beamrider on the Commodore 64 and at the time I was put off by its big, chunky graphics, so I never really took the time to get into the game.
Lulling the first-time player into a false sense of security, Beamrider starts off at a medium pace, but half a dozen levels or so in and the game becomes a frenzied battle for survival against an onslaught of projectiles, spacecraft and debris.

While Beamrider may have been a mediocre game on more advanced systems such as the 5200 or Colecovision, the 2600 version really pushes the system to its limits.

Beamrider is a unique take on the 'space ship shooter' theme that was common on the Atari 2600.
Most notably is that the game is drawn to look 3-Dimensional, with objects that actually get bigger or smaller depending on how close to you they are.
Players who made it to Sector 14 or higher and scored at least 40,000 points were eligible to receive a special Beamriders patch from Activision.

Laser warning sensors have been developed that provide laser detection, angle of arrival, wavelength discrimination and temporal characterization of the laser source.
However, there is a need to improve the threshold detection level and false alarm rate of laser warning sensors for detection of the low-intensity pulsed lasers associated with Beamrider type guided missiles.
Incident power levels are as low as 1.5 x 10E-8 Watts per square centimeter, peak, with pulses whose widths range from 80 to 400 nanoseconds (producing 1.2 to 5 x 10E-15 Joule/sq.cm.
