Cricket is a major sport in places such as England and Wales, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the English-speaking Caribbean (called the West Indies).
Occurs almost exclusively in timed forms of cricket where a draw is a possible result (such as first class cricket), in order that the side declaring have enough time to bowl the opposition out and therefore win.
Used by cricketers both on and off the field to gain advantage of the opposition by frustrating them and breaking the concentration of the opposition.

Leg spin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Leg spin is one of the two basic types of spin bowling in cricket, using wrist spin to move the ball away from the leg side of the batsman.
The stock delivery of a leg spinner is the leg break, which is bowled by using the wrist and the fingers to spin the ball anti-clockwise at the point of delivery.
However, leg spin has again become popular with cricket fans and a successful part of cricket teams, driven largely by the success of Shane Warne, beginning with his spectacular Ball of the Century to Mike Gatting in 1993.

Ban the beamer? - Cricket Blog (India)
In a recent column in 'The Telegraph', he argued for a one match ban whenever a beamer was bowled, regardless of whether it is accidental or deliberate.
He is right that a beamer is a very dangerous delivery and has the potential to severely injure the batsman.
But anyone who's watched the England team for the last 2-3 years would have noticed that the bowlers and fielders hurl their throws to the wicket-keeper, on the full, regardless of whether the batsman is even attempting a run.

Bowlers fire up on Lee's beamer - Cricket - www.theage.com.au
Cricket's fabled fast bowling union is proving a mixed source of support for Brett Lee in his public image battles.
While admitting he used beamers deliberately during his 38-Test career, and conceding he did not see Lee's waist-high ball to McCullum, Hogg said Lee should have been punished for the incident in Saturday's third one-dayer in Auckland.
Hogg said Razzaq's two beamers to Lee in a tri-series final in Sydney, which preceded Lee's high ball to Razzaq, were also intentional.

Lee embarrassed by beamer brouhaha - Cricket - Sport - theage.com.au
Brett Lee says he is embarrassed by the latest in his spate of beamers at opposing batsmen, but insists the delivery that sent Marcus Trescothick diving for cover last Saturday was an accident.
But Lee hopes the Trescothick headhunter was the last beamer of his career and says he is working on eradicating those deliveries from his game.
The beamer aside, Lee's form in the one-dayers has pushed him into calculation for a Test berth, particularly given the moderate form of Jason Gillespie and Michael Kasprowicz early in the tour.
