The earliest recorded version (possibly 7th century) of the name Beaminster is BEBINGMYNSTER, and the most likely meaning is Church of BEBBE, this being a female personal name.
The finest 17th-century houses are to be found on the fringe of the town where they escaped the fires.
The population declined after 1841 when the industries failed, the railway did not come near the town, and the flight from the land led to a great fall in numbers employed in agriculture.

Beaminster Museum is a local history museum covering Beaminster and the surrounding villages.
The old Congregational Chapel was built in 1149 and enlarged in 1825.It is a charming building (Grade II listed), important architecturally to the town, being surrounded by fine 17th and 18th century houses which survived the three great fires which devastated other parts.
The building was acquired in 1990 by the Beaminster Museum Trust, a registered charity set up to found and maintain a museum for the town of Beaminster and the surrounding rural area.

BEAMINSTER, a market town and parish in the hundred of BEAMINSTER-FORUM and REDHONE, Bridport division of the county of DORSET, 17½ miles (W.N.W.) from Dorchester, and 137¼ (W.S.W.) from London, containing 2806 inhabitants.
It was rebuilt by means of a parliamentary grant of £2000, but was again nearly destroyed by a fire which occurred in 1684: in 1781, it experienced a similar calamity, but the greater part of the buildings having been insured, it soon recovered its former prosperity.
This parish contains the manors of Beaminster Prima, and Beaminster Sceunda, forming two prebends in the Cathedral Church of Salisbury; the former is rated in the king's books at £20.
