The first settlement in the county, and in Bear Lake Valley was Paris, which was settled by Mormon pioneers on September 26, 1863.
Bear Lake County was established in 1893 and was named after a lake in the county.
In the county the population was spread out with 33.00% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 22.40% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who were 65 years of age or older.

Bear Lake became our family destination of choice for summer vacations and our children, like their parents, have spent part of every summer at Bear Lake.
The level of Bear Lake had fluctuated over the years but I grew increasingly concerned as the severe drought of the late 80's and the early 90's sucked the waters down to near record lows.
Bear Lake Watch must continue to be proactive and aggressive if we wish to stay in tune with our mission statement of "protecting and preserving Bear Lake".

The Bear River Mountains lie along the western edge of the county, and Logan Canyon opens up to the west of Garden City, which is a quaint tourist town that lies on the western edge of Bear Lake.
Rich County is bordered by Cache County to the west, Weber and Morgan counties to the southwest, Summit County to the south, Uinta County, Wyoming to the southeast, Lincoln County, Wyoming to the northeast, and Bear Lake County, Idaho to the north.

The original Oregon Trail runs through the northeast section of Bear Lake County and follows the Bear River and Highway 30 North through Montpelier and the west side of Georgetown.
