Bear Peninsula (74°35′ S 111°00′ W) is a peninsula about 80 km (50 mi) long and 40 km (25 mi) wide which is ice covered except for several isolated rock bluffs and outcrops along its margins, lying 48 km 30 mi) east of Martin Peninsula on Walgreen Coast, Marie Byrd Land.
Named by US-ACAN after the ice-ship USS Bear, flagship of the USAS, from which three reconnaissance flights were made in late February 1940, resulting in the discovery of Walgreen Coast (with probable sighting of this feature) and the Thurston Island area.
Launched in 1874 at Greenock, Scotland, for use in the sealing trade, she sank in 30-foot seas and high winds in the North Atlantic, March 19, 1963, at which time she was being towed from Nova Scotia to Philadelphia.

One interesting recent discovery was that fl bears on the Bruce Peninsula are genetically distinct from neighbouring populations in Parry Sound, Bracebridge and Sudbury (The precise degree of genetic isolation has not been determined.).
The size of the fl bear population on the Bruce Peninsula is still unknown.
Bears are spectacular and beautiful wild creatures, and where they have had little contact with humans they tend to avoid us.

Dane estimated the bear to be 8.5 - 9 feet.
It is far from unusual that the bears are inactive for a while after having left the lair, but after all our spotting and waiting it was very frustrating not to be able to see whether the bear was shootable or not.
The bear's weight is anyone's guess, but somewhere between 500 and 700 kg is probable as the bear was still quite fat even after it's long sleep in the lair.

Located south of Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula, is about 8,400 mi² and connected to the Alaska mainland by a mountainous, 9 mi-wide isthmus that restricts dispersal of bears between the peninsula and mainland.
Bear Quest: Audubon developed an elementary school curriculum "Bear Quest" that will help young people learn about bears, avoid bear problems, and increase their safety in bear country.

Bears are curious, intelligent and potentially dangerous animals, but undue fear of bears can endanger both bears and people.
Most bears are interested only in protecting food, cubs or their "personal space." Once the threat is removed, they will move on.
State law allows a bear to be shot in self-defense if you did not provoke the attack and if there is no alternative, but the hide and skull must be salvaged and turned over to the authorities.

Inland grizzly bears are smaller than coastal bears averaging 7ft, probably because they do not have a readily available supply of protein-rich food, such as salmon, in their diet.
Brown bears (Ursus arctos) occur throughout Alaska except on the islands south of Frederick Sound in southeastern Alaska, the islands west of Unimak in the Aleutian Chain, and the islands of the Bering Sea.

A decent bear had presented my hunter with a shot opportunity on the second day of the hunt, howbeit a five-second opportunity, but my hunter thought the bear was too far away.
The bear’s head was sticking out from the edge of the alders, not on the river’s edge, but on the front side of the island that faced our camp.
