Bear market - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bear market is a phase in the life of a financial market, such as a stock market, in which the prices of most securities fall consistently, as reflected by a downward movement of one or more key stock market or other financial market indices.
By one common definition, a bear market is marked by a price decline of 20% or more in a key stock market index from a recent peak over at least a two-month period.
The opposite of a bear market is a "bull market."

Bear market rally - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In investing, a bear market rally is a temporary increase in price of a type of asset during a bear market.
A bear market rally is sometimes defined as a rise of at least 10%, but not more than 20%.
Of course, with this definition, whether a rise is a bear market rally can be determined only with hindsight.

But, on the other hand, if the overall market trend is bearish, if the market is fundamentally overvalued, and if the overall economy is weakening, the odds are very high that any rally is simply another bear market rally playing off short-term market psychology aiming to lure unsuspecting investors to their doom.
The bears point out that bear market rallies are by definition extreme and spectacular, just like this one, so the bear market can lure more bulls to their doom as it slowly annihilates bullish sentiment.
In light of past market lessons, current market action, and the strategic market backdrop, the odds are vastly in favor of the bearish thesis that the current US equity rallies are little more than seductive bear market rallies that will ultimately collapse to new lows.

Whether this Bear Market rally continues for a week, a month or a number of months, a breaking of the earlier posted stock market lows is virtually assured.
What is remarkable about this Bear Market is the fact that despite the incredible $8+ trillion losses sustained by shareholders, we have not yet witnessed the true panic that has accompanied all earlier Bear Markets.
Further, we are hearing an increasing number of alleged market experts, who never saw the Bear Market approaching until it was well in progress, espousing their beliefs that a new Bull Market has arrived.

Whenever investors witness a spectacular daily rally in the NASDAQ or other stock index that is among the largest ever, they should not interpret it as a joyous sign of a turnaround but they should run for the hills to preserve their scarce capital from the evolving hungry and vicious bear.

 Bear-Market Rally Autopsy 2
Five weeks ago I concluded the first iteration of the “Bear-Market Rally Autopsy” essay with, “While it certainly could still run higher, the PCR sell signal discussed last week coupled with these decidedly bearish technical internals suggest the scales of probability are now drastically tilted towards the short side in the coming months.
Now there is certainly nothing wrong with being bullish in either a secular bull market or during a short bear-market rally, but it is the height of investing folly to remain stubbornly bullish in the midst of a brutal Great Bear market!
Since the great speculation game in the elite stock indices and options is riding the bear rallies up and shorting their subsequent collapses, we pay an inordinate amount of attention to the rhythm of the bear-market rallies.

A New Bull, or a Bear Market Rally?
In this chart, we see that the last time the SandP 500 was as much as 40% undervalued was after the great bear market of 1973-4, which makes sense given that the recent peak to trough decline in the SandP 500 was about the same magnitude, and the Nasdaq fell by an astounding 75%.
If you play with the Economy.com stock market calculator, you'll see that a 1% rise in interest rates reduces the valuation of the SandP 500 by about 10%, which is disturbing, considering that the yield on the 10-year is trading at a 43-year low.
Even after the recent rally, this model estimates that the SandP 500 remains undervalued by 33%, assuming yields of 4.75% and could be undervalued as much as 50% if yields remain around 3.5%.
