Bearbaiting isn't a biological issue; as a result of short hunting seasons and strict bag limits, fl bears have made a dramatic comeback in the past few decades and are doing well throughout their range.
Bearbaiting was no different then, except that, at least in Maine, it's now permitted only in fall (so nursing cubs aren't orphaned) and it has become big business.
The irrelevant truth is that fl bears are stable or increasing throughout their range; the superstition—dispelled by the 17 bear-hunting states that have outlawed baiting—is that baiting is an “indispensable tool” for keeping bear populations in check, especially where the woods are “too thick” for efficient bear hunting.

 Pit Bull - MSN Encarta
In the United States, the most common breed of pit bull is the American pit bull terrier.
Pit bulls were originally bred for the sports of bullbaiting and bearbaiting, and for the purpose of developing a brave, swift dog with a powerful bite to be used in the now illegal sport of dogfighting.
Some breeders have crossed the American Staffordshire terrier with other breeds, especially the English bull terrier, yielding especially aggressive animals that are also called pit bulls.

A state appeals court has upheld voter-approved bans on most animal trapping, bearbaiting and using dogs to hunt bears and cougars.
At issue were two initiatives: I-655, which banned bearbaiting and hunting bears, cougars, bobcats and lynx with dogs; and I-713, which banned the use of two poisons and most body-gripping traps.
Among other reasons, I-713 was controversial because even though it makes exceptions for live beaver traps and for common rat and mouse traps, it forbid the trapping of moles and gophers that tear up suburban lawns and golf courses.

Public theaters such as the one in which Shakespeare made his livelihood were fairly large open-air structures, able to hold about 3,000 people.
In order to compete with rival theaters, as well as the popular pastimes of bullbaiting and bearbaiting, acting troupes changed their show bills often, generally daily.
They introduced new plays regularly, helping partially explain why about 2,000 plays were written by more than 250 dramatists between 1590 and the closing of the theaters in 1642.
