Bearded Tit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bearded Tit, Panurus biarmicus, is a small passerine bird.
It is also frequently known as the Bearded Reedling, since it is a member of the parrotbill family of birds rather than a true tit in the family Paridae.
Although the parrotbills and their relatives, the Old World babblers are otherwise confined to warm climates, the Bearded Tit is a species of temperate Europe and Asia.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Beard
Hence clerics are directed to shave their beards; for the cutting of the hair of the beard, which is said to be nourished by the superfluous humours of the stomach, denotes that we ought to cut away the vices and sins which are a superfluous growth in us.
To judge by the portraits of the popes, it was with Clement VII (1523) that a distinct beard began to be worn, and many among his successors, for example Paul III, allowed the beard to grow to considerable length.
Still, though the length of clerical beards decreased during the seventeenth century, it was not until its close that the example of the French court and the influence of Cardinal Orsini, Archbishop of Beneventum, contributed to bring about a return to the earlier usage.

The Mikado, Act I, "Titipu"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The fact that the first edition of the OED doesn't list the sense of "breast" for "tit" doesn't, of course, mean it wasn't used that way -- these were, after all, Victorians writing the dictionary and choosing the books (and later periodicals) and the senses found in those books.
Some people believe that the "tit-willow," rather than being a patent fabrication Ko-Ko uses to enlist Katisha's sympathies, must be a real bird, and they find in it an American quail which they believe Sullivan must have heard on his trip to America in the early 1880s.
This discussion is based on the definition of the word tit in the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, which requires a little explanation.

This is a Bearded Tit, Parurus biarmicus, in fact it is not really a tit at all and a better name for it would be a Reedling, it is more closely related to a group of birds known as babblers.
On the particular day that I took this the Reedlings were particularly visible but usually you only get a quick glimpse of them as they fly up out of the reeds only to disappear back in them as quickly as they came out.
Also they are not really bearded, they have more of a mustache than a beard so the name is particularly poor.

Very similar in appearance to our native Long-tailed Tit, the body is completely brown with reddish wings which are usually held in a dropped position showing their colour, leading to an olive under body, around the face they plumage tends to be lighter these birds have a characteristic parrot bill.
Feeding: Parrotbills are primarily classed as omnivores and have a dual approach to feeding by adapting between different diets, this is due to its sedentary nature by not migrating to new areas in search of insect food sources remaining in the cold climate making these birds a good choice in temperate climates.
This adaptation is shared by a number of species including the Pekin Robin I also observed the same to a lesser extent in Sivas, Tits and Yuhinas.
