The Beartooths are home to the largest contiguous land area in the U.S. of over 10,000 feet (3048 m), and is the location of Granite Peak, which at 12,799 feet (3901 m) is the highest point in the state of Montana.
The mountains are traversed by road via the Beartooth Highway (U.S. 212) with the highest elevation at Beartooth Pass (10,947 ft, 3,336 m).
The mountains are also the location of the largest known deposits of platinum and chrome and the second largest deposits of nickel found in the U.S. Huge expansive plateaus are found at altitudes in excess of 10,000 feet (3048 m) with over 25 peaks exceeding 12,000 feet (3658 m).

The ancient rocks and minerals in the Beartooth Mountains are part of one of oldest pieces of crust in North America and provide many insights into early crustal formation on the Earth.
Most of the eastern portion of the Beartooth Mtns are composed of granitic rocks with large xenoliths of older metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rocks that were tectonically interleaved on a meter-scale.

The boundaries of the Beartooth and Absaroka Mountains have been a bit controversial at times, but in general the Beartooths lay to the east of the Absarokas.

Most of my recent research has concentrated on the well-exposed metamorphosed supracrustal rocks that are part of a large tectonic melange caught up in the areally extensive, 2.8 billion year old granitoid plutons of the eastern Beartooth Mountains.
One reason that these rocks are particularly significant is that some of the detrital zircons in the quartzites are 4 billion years old.
