The Beartooth Highway is an All-American Road that has been called "the most beautiful drive in America," by late CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt.
The Beartooth Highway is the section of U.S. Highway 212 between Red Lodge, Montana and Cooke City, Montana.
When driving from the east to the west, the highest parts of the Beartooth Highway level off into a wide plateau near the top of the pass, and then descend to where the Beartooth Highway connects to the Chief Joseph Highway near Cooke City, which forms the northeast gateway to Yellowstone National Park.

Once in Cooke City I was dying to ride Beartooth Pass, it was the wholly grail to me after a long ride that included more dessert than I had bargained for.

Beartooth Pass is a 50 mile ride but it turned into a 100 mile ride since I rode some stretches three times.

For the last 3 Memorial Day weekends (including this recent one) I and a number of friends have made the trek from Bozeman down to the Beartooth Pass, a scenic highway going between Red Lodge, MT and Cooke City, MT over the Beartooth Mountains.
The reason we go down is that the pass is closed through the entire winter and is opened up on Memorial Day weekend and thus opens up many opportunities for fairly easily accescible backcountry skiing.
The pass was closed due to high winds and blowing snow blocking the road so many of the places to ski were cut off, all except for Rock Creek.

It scared me because I felt I had barely mustered enough strength to reach Logan Pass at 6,670 ft., and the Beartooth is almost 11,000 ft..
Beartooth Pass has two summits, the first slightly higher than the second going toward Red Lodge.
After the second summit at Beartooth Pass, it was an awesome 20 mile downhill ride to Red Lodge.

By all means, take the pass into Yellowstone, be certain you have a good trans cooler, pay attention to the road signs, and watch for traffic.
Once you start up the pass, speed won't be that high and your engine will drop a lot of horsepower due to elevation.

A hand catch made this a moot point but there was some pretty significant turbulence on the way in so I felt better safe than sorry.
I’ve noticed that in the mountain passes the wind can be deceiving and it may blow directly in your face at the edge while being almost 180 degrees different out 200 feet.

Along this stretch, a bear or two might be seen scrambling up the steep embankments, Farther on, at Beartooth Pass, travelers can look out over a mountains terrain as large as all of the New England states combined.
The worst problem however was, that there were no signs of the elevation heights and no sign of the pass itsself - so I never knew when we were at the pass - the next curve was an eternal surprise.
