Beast Cops : review by Shelly Kraicer
For Beast Cops, he, co-director Dante Lam, and cinematographer Tony Cheung adopt the Hong Kong film industry's small-budget "indie" look of the moment: a gritty, intense, casually shot feel that depends on a jittery, swoopy, hyperactive hand held camera, expressive lighting effects, and saturated colours.
Even for beast cops, there are ultimately clear choices to be made, and the Gordon Chan rules apply: brotherhood and loyalty override other obligations.
Beast Cops dares to betray a fierce, unfocused anxiety at loose in 1998 Hong Kong.

 Beast Cops (1998)
Beast Cops supposes that there should be honor among thieves, but when no honor exists one can only do what's necessary.
The story concerns HK cops Tung (Anthony Wong) and Sam (Sam Lee), who are in deep with the triads.
The fight scenes in Beast Cops are few and far between (it's mainly about relationships), and all involve big, scary knives.

A by-the-rules cop is placed in the same turf as a cop who collaborates with the triads.
Modern cop drama with Anthony Wong playing the mildly corrupt cop who keeps a lid on things, Michael Wong as the uptight straight cop who'll gun down a criminal regardless of the danger to the hostage, and Sam Lee as the skinny cop who always gets the goss.
Most of Beast Cops is concerned with the interaction between the three cops, and the conflict between their way of walking the beat.

Chinese Movie Review | Beast Cops (1998) Michael Wong, Anthony Wong
It certainly doesn't breathe new life into its genre, and while Anthony Wong is quite affable as a cop trying to walk the unmarked line between being crooked and just "playing the game", the ambiguity one expects of his character is not altogether well scripted.
You would think a cop who would shoot his own boss, and who got the nicknamed "King of Killers" for his quick trigger finger, would be less prone to corruption.
The co-directors of "Beast Cops" are Gordon Chan and Dante Lam, two men responsible (individually) for some pretty good action movies in recent years.

BEAST COPS reviewed by Jonathan Marshall
Beast Cops is certainly something of a surprise in HK film, for despite billing as a ‘gritty, cop flick’, there is only one extended action sequence - albeit one involving as much blood and maiming as Evil Dead!
Although Beast Cops is not up to the inspired quality of Wong Kar-Wai’s Chungking Express, it does share that film’s Altman-esque sense that little connects these characters except chance encounters, common associates and geographic proximity.
Beast Cops is a great, inventive variant on both cop/action flicks and the engagingly unfocussed ensemble dramas of Altman, Tarantino, Wong and Hal Hartley.

The direction during the course of the movie is very held back and the camera sometimes feel like it's looking in at peoples lives and for once I felt I almost lived this world.
Tung is such an interesting character to follow and in the hands of a lesser known or less skillful actor, he wouldn't have achieved the depth and texture that Anthony brings to it.
Beast Cops was the perfect script for him though.

 Beast Cops
Anthony Wong is always a solid actor and here he takes the starring role as a cop caught between the two sides, unsure as to where his loyalties lie.
Michael Wong, despite his strong build and introduction as a cop on the edge, has little action to partake in and sadly his acting is as wooden as ever.
His character has very little depth (but whether this is due to his poor dialogue delivery or the script is unknown) and comes across as slightly unbelievable with no ambition or set of morals in his life.

Beast Cops is a 1998 Hong Kong film (interesting, since it’s the first Hong Kong flick I’ve seen since the 1997 handover) that appears to be just like the countless other ‘cop vs triad’ films on a cursory inspection.
Beast Cops features many of these moments (though not quite as many as you might expect) but they’re balanced with some fantastic scenes where the characters are developed.
Beast Cops has a very distinctive visual look to it—a look that’s clearly been influenced by everything from John Woo and Ringo Lam’s Hong Kong action films, Beat Takeshi Kitano’s cool Japanese Yakuza films, Cops, and even NYPD Blue.

If you like cop dramas and action films and don't mind reading a movie (though I do enjoy when the dubbing is different than the subtitles), Beast Cops is a great movie.
His portrayal of the crooked cop is superb.
The story itself concerns Anthony Wong as a cop who walks the line between crooked and straight and his friendship with a local Triad played well by Cheung, though whose screen time isn't as long as I would have liked.

Plot: A married cop must pretend to be his single partner to gain the confidence of the only witness to a murder which ties in a vicious thief with a huge drug deal.
The comedy is pretty much limited to a mistaken-identity scenario, with married man Lawrence trying to pass for stud-muffin Smith; the one-liners fly by with regularity, and there are some funny moments to be had with the ridiculous situation, but some of it is just milked to death.
Beast Cops ends up being a decent (if repetitive) cop-buddy movie with an interesting style but one that doesn't quite live up to its potential either as a drama or as an action film.

Ruthlessly realistic, and vivid and unremitting in its uncompromising brutality and honesty, Beast Cops is a visceral and hard-hitting exploration of the dichotomous existence of two cops charged with upholding the law, while balancing on a moral knife-edge.
Compelling and controversial, with a breakout performance of startling intensity from leading man Anthony Wong, this raw and enticing action-thriller has mesmerized audiences worldwide with its disturbing examination of the subjective and marginal morality, which inhabits the uncertain and ambiguous world of law enforcement.
Chan is more interested in the toll of the job and the influence of temptation on the law enforcers than the usual display of Hong Kong kinetics, but he delivers the goods in a few impressive sequences of mob brawls and vicious machete attacks.

To be honest, the moving camera and quick edits seem to actually work to the film’s advantage—they fit with the philosophy espoused by the main characters and they keep the pace of the film from flagging.
Ultimately, Gen-X Cops is a decent film that manages to entertain for most of its nearly two hour running time.
It drops the ball on several occasions, and the performances aren’t always as good as they could be, but the film has a light, irreverent tone that manages to make some of the flaws almost forgivable.

 beast cops - film review
It cleaned up at the Hong Kong film awards in 1999, and this astonishingly violent drama of gangsters against gangbusters features uniformly excellent performances (from a cast unknown beyond the HK scene), and some of the bloodiest fight scenes ever staged outside of your basic serial killer horror shocker.
Though much of the street action has the feel of fly-on-the-wall documentary, the authentic seeming script about a gambling cop's confrontations with both his new partner and warring factions of HK organised crime, does field measures of fl humour and fierce emotion.
The revenge attack at the film's climax amounts to mini-horror flick all by itself.

Hard to be sure what to expect from the title, but it probably isn't what you get; a strongly character-driven cop movie, whose predictability is forgivable in the face of an excellent performance from Anthony Wong as a cop who is so aimiably corrupt he has achieved a Zen-like tranquility.
