Beast Machines picks up where the previous (and well-liked) Transformers series, Beast Wars, left off, with Optimus Primal and the remaining Maximal team returning to their home planet of Cybertron, and still in their animal forms.
While Beast Machines was not as Good as Beast Wars, it's still a good series and better than a lot of people are giving it credit for.
Transformers: beast wars was an interesting series on in the mid 90's that revived the transformers for a new generation.

Megatron (Beast Wars and Beast Machines) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Japanese Beast Wars II toy catalogue claims that he had battled and lost to Galvatron (the villain of that series) in the past, while the 2006 BotCon comics revealed he was previously a commander in the Predacon army who had developed many of the Predacons' tactics.
Unable to fully purge the last vestiges of his beast mode from his body, Megatron stubbornly refused to render himself vulnerable even for an instant by simply moving his Spark to another body, therefore leaving him trapped in the very thing he hated the most, a partially organic beast form.
Although (naturally) designed to be part of the Beast Machines toyline, this figure of Megatron's fortress/spaceship body was aborted, and then revived for the Robots in Disguise toyline in 2002, where it was reimagined as a new body for that universe's Megatron.

The 'Battle for the Spark' Beast Machines toys from 2001 went some length to correct this, as many toys were designed around their TV likenesses.
I really like many of the toys, Vehicons especially, but overall Beast Machines strikes me as a line (and a television show) that had a lot of wasted potential, and a little more time and planning, instead of rushing the toys to market for the start of the year, might have done wonders.
The first Beast Machines Cheetor toy was a disappointment, having poor similarity to TV Cheetor and difficulty standing properly.

Movieman's Guide to the Movies - Beast Machines Transformers: The Complete Series (2006) - DVD Review
Beast Machines: Transformers is a direct sequel to the cgi hit cartoon Beast Wars: Transformers and is the last animated chapter in the original Transformers saga.
The story follows some of the Maximals/Autobots from the previous series who have returned to their home planet of Cybertron only to discover Megatron has somehow taken over and enslaved the planet and all of it’s inhabitants as mindless drones.
Beast Machines is nowhere near as good as Beast Wars and doesn’t have the charming characters of the original Transformers but it’s a good and solid sci-fi/action cartoon that’s fun for children and adult fans alike.

Many of the new features include a "spark orb" like the Transmetal 2s, and the use of transparent plastic in the robot eyes to make them appear as if their eyes were "glowing".
One of the downsides to Beast Machines Transformers, however, is that the toys do not resemble their TV show counterparts as closely as the original Transformers and the Beast Warriors toys did.
Because of this fact, I have included an extra little stat in the toy reviews of the Beast Machines that are on the show; it's entitled "Similiarity to counterpart".
