Beastie Boys - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The record gave the Beastie Boys a name as a party band, which was reinforced by their ridiculous behavior and controversial live shows.
The Beastie Boys were formed in New York City in 1981 as a hardcore punk band.
The name "Beastie" originally stood for "Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Inner Excellence," though some have claimed it actually stood for "Boys Entering Altered States To Induce Ecstasy." Its original line-up consisted of Adam Yauch on bass, Kate Schellenbach on drums, John Berry on guitar and Michael Diamond on vocals.

Beastie I also said that I wanted people to see the camaraderie that it takes, with this band at least, to get through this shit and the guerilla-style of humor we had to use on each other just to stay normal.
Beastie So when you see them knocking on my door and it's all dramatic and it's like "Is Beastie a jerk for talking shit about the other bands?" I never once said they are not great.
Beastie What I'm getting at is that when they are working from the finish and then show you the start and they know exactly how they want to do that, they are going to leave things out.

Thus, as the district court properly concluded, the fact that Beastie Boys "looped" the sample throughout "Pass the Mic" is irrelevant in weighing the sample's qualitative and quantitative significance.
We hold today that Beastie Boys' use of a brief segment of that composition, consisting of three notes separated by a half-step over a background C note, is not sufficient to sustain a claim for copyright infringement.
We affirm the district court's grant of summary judgment on the ground that Beastie Boys' use of the composition was de minimis and therefore not actionable.

Critics derided the Beastie Boys as one-hit wonder material, and as New York "white-boy rappers" who were leeching off African American street music forms known as "rap" and hip-hop, both of which were in their early stages of development.
Other musicians have been added to the onstage mix and toured with the Beastie Boys throughout their career, but it is this trio that is the creative and musical force behind the band.
