An ode to the beat generation, the album elucidates Crimson's past and purpose, melding Frippertronic tape techniques in equal partnership with Belew's manic physicality.
Beat achieves Fripp's long-sought union of mind, soul and body, centering around the anniversary of Jack Kerouac's On the Road.
For some back-catalogue history, Frame by Frame is a lavish and thorough boxed retrospective (dwarfing 1987's skimpy Compact King Crimson): three chronologically grouped discs of studio material and a fourth of live tracks.

King Crimson paid tribute to Jack Kerouac and his works with their album "Beat", which contained songs "Neal and Jack and me" and "Satori in Tangier".
The novel is often described as the defining work of the post-war jazz-, poetry-, and drug-affected Beat Generation.
It was in New York that Kerouac met the people whom he was to journey around the world with, and return to write about: the so-called Beat Generation, which included people like Allen Ginsberg,

"Beat" is definitely the more accessible of King Crimson's three albums of the '80's, but this is not a bad thing.
Such is the problem with King Crimson's "Beat," their follow-up to 1981's masterful, groundbreaking "Discipline." As with "In the Wake of Poseidon" (1970), their encore to 1969's "In the Court of the Crimson King" (which officially launched the progressive rock movement), "Beat" represents an erratic effort to continue King Crimson's tradition of relentless trailblazing.
On the tracks which don't sound like Talking Heads, the band degenerate into a free form jazz sound, which is appropriate, given the title of the album, an ode to the Beat generation.

King Crimson: Lizard - An Analysis by Andrew Keeling
'Lizard' is a concept album with a difference from those of the period, where the idea of social chaos is wrapped-up in suitably fitting metaphors such as the circus, the family, The Beatles and the Lizard.
It is as though the conflicts of 'Lizard' are subsequently laid to rest in favour of the more Eros-laden music of 'Islands', and what was begun as far back as 'In the Court of the Crimson King' is, by now, treated in a very different way through 'feeling'.
The mellotron pitches are also sustained over the bars by one beat, which is connected to the phrase structure which, in turn, has been stretched from four to six bars.

Nevertheless, all the songs are largely instrumental, and here I must note that during the years, separating Good Night to the Bucket from their debut album, the band had time to fall in love with King Crimson and UK and such their songs as "Starless", "Indiscipline", "Industry", "Danger Money" and "Caesar's Palace Blues" in particular.
This is certainly true on the four-part "Antiwar Requiem", which spans the album's first side: "Dies irae" greets the listener with a brusque drummachine beat in military mode and wave upon shrill, dissonant saw wave from the upper register of Varga's Roland Jupiter 8, sort of like a grim call-to-arms fanfare heralding a total war.
On the second and third sides of Collegium Musicum 's final album, Divergencie, keyboardist Marián Varga was already moving from rock pieces, however extended or convoluted, to composing purely classical music.

Bill Rieflin is probably best known as the beat-keeper for a number of bands over the years: Ministry, the Revolting Cocks, 1000 Homo DJs, Lead Into Gold, Pigface, Chris Connelly, KMFDM, NIN, Peter Murphy, Ruby, Sweet 75, etc. But, he is also a true multi-instrumentalist with training in piano and guitar as well as drums/programming.

It also featured more open spaces and texture over the previously tight fretwork to be found on "Discipline" and "Beat."
