Beat generation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The adjective "beat" (introduced to the group by Herbert Huncke) had the connotations of "tired" or "down and out", but Kerouac added the paradoxical connotations of "upbeat", "beatific", and the musical association of being "on the beat".
The original members or the Beat Generation group — in Allen Ginsberg's phrase, "the libertine circle" — used a number of different drugs.
The Beats in general were a large influence on members of the new "counterculture", for example, in the case of Bob Dylan who became a close friend of Allen Ginsberg.

 LitKicks: The Beat Generation
by Levi Asher (brooklyn) Sep 20, 2001 10:36 AM Like the French Impressionist artists of Paris, the Beat writers were a small group of close friends first, and a movement later.
The term "Beat Generation" gradually came to represent an entire period in time, but the entire original Beat Generation in literature was small enough to have fit into a couple of cars (at times this nearly happened).
The "latter day beats" added some much needed cultural diversity, as well as an infusion of new ideas and talent, to the core of white male friends that were the "classic beats".

 MTV.com - Bronski Beat
The new version of Bronski Beat was quite successful as well, notching club hits in the U.K. and abroad; Truthdare Doubledare, the 1986 sophomore album, went Top 20 in the group's home country, and "Hit That Perfect Beat" rivaled "Smalltown Boy" in high chart placements.
It was only Bronski Beat's first single, but it became the group's best-known, reaching the top of Billboard's U.S. dance chart while peaking at number three on the U.K. pop chart.
Steve Bronski brought a new lineup together in the mid-'90s -- including vocalist Jonathan Hellyner -- and recorded Rainbow Nation for the German ZYX label.

Afro Beat - Recommended Records (Slipcue Music e-zine African Music Guide)
A widely-sampled funk band from the disco era, this group was also known as Ice, and though centered in Paris during the African pop boom of the 1970s, they actually hailed from the U.S. Nonetheless, their Kool And The Gang-meets-LA Express instrumental jams are often thought of in terms of the Afro-Beat that influenced them.
The "Afro-Beat" sound -- African dance music fused with rock and modern funk -- was pioneered by Nigerian superstar, Fela Kuti, but it soon spread throughout the African continent, with dozens of bands taking up the new style.
The best thing about Antibalas is that they are an actual, functioning musical group, not just some haloed band from the hazy past of African popular music.

The term Beats has been said by scholars and members of the Beatnik group to refer to the word beatific, which suggests happiness and bliss, as well as the word beaten, which suggests beaten down and broken.
Straddling these alternate meanings, the Beats embraced the ideals of Walt Whitman, who in the 1800s shaped a style of romantic and celebratory poetry truly unlike anything before, and the jazz movement, which was being recognized for its impromptu bravado and originality.
