A beat is a pulse on the beat level, the metric level at which pulses are heard as the basic unit.
Thus a beat is the basic time unit of a piece; when you tap your foot to music, each tap is a beat.
Much music is characterised by a sequence of stressed and unstressed beats (often called "strong" and "weak") organised into a meter and partially indicated by a time signature, the speed of which is determined by a tempo.

World Beat: Music From Somewhere Else (15 January 2002) - PopMatters Music Column
Nonetheless, the most popular forms of "world music" tend to be the heavily percussive, eminently danceable musics of Africa and the African diaspora, such as West African highlife, Jamaican reggae, Dominican merengue, and the many forms of Cuban-inspired salsa.
As the phrases "international roots", "world beat" and "music from 'outside' Western pop culture" suggest, the "world" in question is an inclusive one of traditional communities and their artistic envoys struggling to express their cultural identities somewhere on the western periphery.
The global intersection of music, culture and commerce speaks to the dynamic social character of an emergent transnational phenomenon, but the cultural and aesthetic meanings produced in the process are hardly self-evident.

When a beat is combined with patterns of accents, and other patterns of changes in pitch, volume etc., then you have the beginnings of rhythm.
This might be literally by a stronger beat perhaps by a drum, or it might be implied by the harmonic or melodic shape of the music.
Within a bar of four or more beats, there will almost certainly be a sub-division, which means that another beat in the bar will be felt as being stronger than the others, but not as strong as the first.

Also of note, The Beat Circus Vaudeville Orchestra is in pre-production on an original score to award-winning animator Lorelei Pepi's incredible 1930s-styled cartoon musical Happy and Gay scheduled for release this year and featuring the voices of the fabulous cabaret singers Leah Callahan and Brian King.

 The Classical Music Beat
Classical music's canon contains works from hundreds of years of composition, and from this some of the most revolutionary, representative, and superior works of this extensive, well-preserved selection can be enjoyed today with confidence that they sound very similar to performances in the composer's time.
Classical-period music is distinguishable from Baroque music by its plainness of style, without the heavy and complex Baroque figurations, and from Romantic music by its general emotional coolness and its regularity of form.
Classical music was written specifically for the sake of music; there is no grand design or no emotion built into it.

Good point, and good music it is. Many people don't like "Beat," that's their choice, and I'll agree it's not as good as "Discipline," but it's still an amazing album.
Such is the problem with King Crimson's "Beat," their follow-up to 1981's masterful, groundbreaking "Discipline." As with "In the Wake of Poseidon" (1970), their encore to 1969's "In the Court of the Crimson King" (which officially launched the progressive rock movement), "Beat" represents an erratic effort to continue King Crimson's tradition of relentless trailblazing.

As for the musicianship on "Beat", the star player here is Tony Levin, who shows the most depth of the four musically, with the other three basically phoning in their licks - which, for the most part, are blatantly repetitive and lack focus.
