Beatmania had two other series: beatmania IIDX and beatmania III.

beatmania offers a plethora of tunes and options, along with being packed with the unique DJ-based controller, but the problem is that not many people are going to be suddenly attracted to the series when they never even heard much about it in the first place.
As with most rhythm games, the object of beatmania is to watch the screen as various notes scroll down from top to bottom; you must hit the corresponding key when it reaches the bar at the bottom at the right moment.
This is not to say that beatmania is a terrible game, because it’s an accurate representation of the arcade hit over in Japan, but it seems that Konami brought over the wrong representation, with a lackluster tracklist to play along to.

The fact that Beatmania has received a North American release at all is a good sign, however, and a testament to the increasing popularity of rhythm action games on this side of the Pacific, even though it's unlikely to ever be anything more than a niche title.

While we're used to playing games at the arcade with drums, guitars, and dance mats; the controller for Beatmania is its own beast.
While the game enjoyed some massive success in Japan at both the arcades and on home systems (in fact there are more Beatmania releases than DDR, can you imagine?) it was never really pushed in the United States.
Beatmania has it nicer now than it would have been had it come to the US earlier.

In the basic Beatmania mode, the game does a respectable job of matching the gameplay to the player's skills, but switching to Beatmania DXII mode is an exercise in frustration, as you'll need to use all seven keyboard keys to keep up with an insanely fast beat.
Beatmania might not be a bad game for fans of the genre, but most other gamers would be better served by Amplitude, DDR or the new reigning champ - Guitar Hero.

Let's get some history here first: Beatmania was the original "music and rhythm" game from Konami, even before DDR came around and let people shake what their mama gave 'em.
A far simpler concept, Beatmania plays at the core more like Amplitude or Guitar Hero: the player is given a progression of anywhere from five (referred to as "Beatmania Classic") or seven ("Beatmania IIDX Style") columns which are linked to buttons.
This release has songs from the first nine iterations of Beatmania IIDX (and the theme is modified from 9th style), and from all over Beatmania Classic's seven-year history from it's beginning to The Final in 2002.

The response to Beatmania in England has been mixed so far; people either love it or hate it.
