 The Succession Laws of Modena
He felt justified, therefore, to make his niece Maria Teresa heir of the Austria-Este claim: at least she descended directly from the antique house of Este, which would not be true of Franz Josef's brothers.
A convention was signed on May 11, 1753, and ratified by the Empress, the duke of Modena, and George II of Great Britain as head of the whole house of Guelf (of which Este was a junior branch).
The final Act of the Congress of Vienna of 1815 returned Modena, Reggio and Mirandola to him, and returned Massa and Carrara to his mother Maria Beatrice Ricciarda.

 Heraldry in Pre-Unification Italy
At the death of Maria-Beatrice Cybo Malaspina d'Austria Este in 1829, Massa was united with Modena under her son Francesco IV.
He died in 1803, and his only daughter Maria-Beatrice (1750-1829) had married the archduke Ferdinand of Austria (1754-1806) in 1771.
In 1805 it was united with the principality of Piombino and given on March 18 to Elisa Bonaparte, sister of Napoleon, and her husband Felix Bacciochi: the flag became three horizontal stripes, sky-blue, white and red.

His father was the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Este, Duke of Breisgau, his mother Maria Beatrice Ricciarda d'Este, Duchess of Massa and Princess of Carrara, Lady of Lunigiana.
In 1812 Francis married the Princess Maria Beatrice of Savoy, who was the daughter of King Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia.
Francis V, Duke of Modena( 1819- 1875, married Princess Adelgunde of Bavaria.

On April 23, 1789, Victor Emanuel was married by proxy to Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria, daughter of Archduke Ferdinand Charles of Austria, Duke of Brisgau (brother of the Emperor Joseph II) and of his wife, Princess Maria Beatrice Este (heiress of the Este dukes of Modena).
Maria Beatrice (1792-1840), married Archduke Francis of Austria (later Duke Francis IV of Modena).
The prince's godparents were his grandfather, King Charles Emanuel III of Sardinia, and his father's sister, Princess Felicita of Savoy.

On June 20, 1812, in the cathedral of Cagliari Mary Beatrice married her uncle, Archduke Francis of Austria, eldest son of Archduke Ferdinand Charles of Austria, Duke of Breisgau, and of his wife, Princess Maria Beatrice Este; a special dispensation for the marriage was received from the Holy See.
Mary Beatrice was henceforward recognised by the Jacobites as "The Princess Mary of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland".
Mary Beatrice died of a heart condition at the villa of Catajo, September 15, 1840, when she was succeeded in her British rights by her elder son Francis.
